my car accelerated, and the brakes would not work
I would be driving my 2000 Camry LE and come to a stop sign / light and the gas pedal would stick and I had to press really hard to depress it as I tried to move. This happened several times. I never missed an oil change or check up. It had 137,000 miles on it. I purchased it in August 2001 from a dealership.
Between 2009 and 2011, I complained to the Toyota dealership where I did my regular service and oil change - (the last one was done this year - April 2013). They would check it and said the pedal did not stick when they test drove it.
In 2011 after another report to them, they cleaned the THROTTLE, The problem lessened significantly, Then on June 10, 2013 as I was driving at a fairly slow rate I needed to press the gas. After I pressed the pedal, I noticed that it did not return to the original height it usually sat at. Then I needed to brake as I was preparing for an upcoming right turn. I tried to depress the brake but the car kept running. I was fast approaching the stop light where I was to make the right turn. Cars were stopped at the light. I thought about steering the car off the road onto the grassy area into shrubs, but then I saw a utility pole and decided to avoid it.
The car kept running as I kept my foot on the brake. I was now close to the cars at the stop light. I tried to keep the car as close as possible to the curb to minimize the impact. My car hit one car and kept going - (there was a chain reaction, as another car got hit)- crossing over the street and hitting the curb where the right front tire exploded and the rim bent badly, and the car finally stopped.
It was written off and I have asked a mechanic to check the gas and brake pedals for defects. This was a most frightening experience.
