I generally get hundreds of thousands of miles from my engines. This Toyota will probably be no different as it runs great. It jbroke 100k miles yesterday after owning it for only 247 days. Yes, I drove it 18,596 miles in the better part of 9 months. It only had slightly over 81K when I got it in November 2018.
Anyway, since I got it, I've treated it with only the best. After watching the oil showdown on the Project Farm channel on utoob, I decided to try Amazon Basics 5W/30 Synthetic oil which my Camry did not like at all. Aside from using oil inbetween changes, the engine has developed a nasty puff of smoke at start up. I immediately started using Penzoil Platinum Synthetic for high mileage engines and the oil usage stopped, however, the puff of smoke has not stopped. It is much lighter, and maybe it will stop at some point, but for now, there is a haze of smoke at start up in my garage.
After talking to several people, we've decided it could be one of 3 things; a bad valve seal, a leaking gas injector or a gummed up oil ring. I really doubt it's the last one as this engine is clean in and out. My guess is a leaking gas injector is allowing a little raw gas to enter the cylinder, because this ONLY happens when the car has been sitting over night. There is no smoke if the engine is started multiple times during the day.
I'm not sure if the use of Amazon Basics had anything to do with it, but it sure seems to. I just don't know how.
