It is a common problem to have the motor of this sun shade go bad as it looks to be a design flaw with the arms of the shade. I was quoted by the dealer that this would be a $1500.00 job. ($1300 parts + $200 labor). My fix to this is to make sure the shade is in the down position and disable it by disconnecting the fuse that gives it power. It's better to not have a shade at all versus having blind spot while driving, especially at night conditions.

Rear shade stuck in up position. Service said the arms are bent probably from motor trying to lower it while jammed. $1200 part plus $300 labor estimate to fix.

Shocked, annoyed, and outraged. I went in thinking that there would be an easy fix to a problem that came out of thin air; I was not ready for thirteen hundred dollars to get the sunscreen operational and out of the up position. I worry that the blind spots created with the screen up will cause an unnecessary accident and I don't feel safe driving at night. My field of vision is seriously compromised. I talked with another Avalon owner who is having the same problem. His screen goes in a sideways position when trying to engage. Clearly, this is an accessory that needs more work. To add insult to injury, the service staff had the audacity to blame the problem on the age of the car. I plan to keep this car, as there is nothing else wrong with it, for a few more years. Sounds like my options are limited on an unnecessary accessory.
