2006 Toyota Avalon V6 has defective engine ignition coils.
I have replaced the front three coils at $200+ for each instance. The fourth coil just blew. This is most likely one of the back coils. I am told that the engine will need to be removed to have this coil serviced. It would be best to replace the remaining three coils at the same time. This will be considerably more costly than the first three replacements.
There seems to be some connection with engaging the cruise control and the blown coil. Engage the cruise, the check engine light (left dash) comes on and almost simultaneously the VSC light (right dash). The combination of two lights stops the use of cruise control (E6—error 6), the car drives less stable and the mileage becomes worse due to the blown coil in one of the cylinders.
A steady glow of the two lights is a warning to get service soon. If the check engine light begins to blink, you need to pull over immediately and have the vehicle towed to service.
While the car will still drive with the situation, ignoring the problem can cause additional problems such as damaging the catalytic converter which will then have to be replaced at considerable cost.
