- Fix Start Issues On 2002 Avalon - I had bought a used 2002 Avalon and replaced many components so this issue baffled me a little. I had already cleaned the fuel system and fuel filter, changed spark plugs, changed charcoal canister due to not being able to fill the tank without pump shutting off every 1/2 to 2 gallons, having rough idle and error codes when starting car just after fueling, and many other parts so, I already knew that all of these issues had been resolved. Fuel pump was working at initial turning of key, battery had been replaced recently, and starter engaged with dash lights on. The car would crank, but would not start. I pushed down gas pedal while turning key and was able to get car to start and it ran as long as my foot was on the gas pedal and if I kept foot on gas pedal until engine was warm, it would idle on its own. The fix was an Idle control valve. Toyota may refer to this as a cold start valve, but you will have better luck finding your part and information with idle control valve. Please see URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcdn_0eiZQY as this is a good reference for locating and replacing this part. I would recommend removing the part so you can have a parts store match up the O-ring that seems to be difficult to get a part number on. This will save you the trouble of going to the parts store twice as it will leak if you try to reuse the old O-ring. As soon as I replaced the Idle Control Valve, my car started right up. Hope this helps. You can also go to the Toyota site that gives a long list of possible items to check https://parts.olathetoyota.com/blog/9214/toyota-wont-start-troubleshooting-tips. Make sure you are not using a newly cut key from the local hardware store as you need to have the chip in it or the car will not start either. Similar symptoms except it will not start with pushing gas pedal down. Check fuel pump fuse as well to save time as this also has the same symptom of not seeming to get fuel to the engine.

The car stopped after it passed a bump. Engine would crank but not start. The local garage worked on it for 4 days and then it was with Toyota Romano Syracuse for 10 days. The service center couldn't rectify the problem and keep on pushing days.
