CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

Transmission had to be replaced on late 2007 Toyota 4runner with only 63,000 miles on it. Additionally, oil pan system had to be replaced. Toyota claimed it was aftermarket parts, yet Toyota is has regularly changed the oil and performed all maintenance on the vehicles as records show. Toyota covered the cost of the transmission but charged the customer labor despite being out of warranty, which makes the customer think this is a known issue with the year and model.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota 4 runner. Randomly once or twice a month. When the consumer would shift from reverse to drive, the transmission would fail to engage for approximately 5 seconds. When the engine RPM's were up, the transmission would violently engage and then leap forward. The dealer stated that if they cannot duplicate the failure, there's nothing they can do to fix the problem. The failure has occurred approximately 12 times in the past 6 to 8 months. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 35000 and the current mileage was 51340. Updated 2/17/10 updated 02/22/10
