CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
"tire low" light goes on a lot. The first time, I actually had a flat. The rest of the times it happened, I went to the tire shop, and they said that either one tire was a little low (not dangerously) or none of them were. This is annoying because the light won't go off by itself if you fill the low tire -- someone has to turn it off manually. Also, I take the vehicle off paved roads fairly frequently, so I need to know whether there really is a problem if the light comes on.
There was a recent recall on Toyota trucks for the tire gauge. I have had the exact problem with my Toyota 4-runner (2006). The tire gauge light is always one. When I take it in for service they turn the gauge off but goes right back on. I have talked to others and they have the same issue with their 4-runners and Lexus rx400H. I talked to the service manager and he said he sees the issue all the time with 4-runners.
