CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

car lunges forward & thunks
This problem has continued to get worse. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all but has consistently got more frequent. The car surges forward after braking and on 2 occasions feels as if it doesn't completely release from the rear of the vehicle which makes the RPM's go up but after turning car off it seems to release. The transmission seems to change out normally and no leaks . I have had all maintenance completed on vehicle as recommended but not sure what is causing this problem. It seems to be a braking/safety issue. I have really enjoyed this SUV since I purchased new but getting concerned about the safety of it. Anyone have any advice?
