CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

Lunges slightly when it comes to complete stop. Car is stopped so it hasn't caused a problem but is definitely startling.

4Runner SR5 TRD V6

Car lunges forward while stopped/slowing to stop/starting from a stop at stop lights, stop signs, etc. Taken to dealership 3 times in the last 3 months to address, dealership couldn't re-create so not an issue for them. On tech suggested might need to replace drive shaft but new part no longer available. Didn't seem to know what the problem may be. I googled it and found a TON of info about it. Absolutely NO confidence in local dealer, took 3 trips and complaining to the service manager to fix the brake job they did. Tried to tell me the noise resulting from their brake job was due to variances in manufacture of brake components and to drive something else for a couple of days then I probably wouldn't notice the noise so much...really!?

After 3rd trip they discovered BROKEN component and that rotors weren't turned properly. Once those things were addressed noises finally ceased. Searched forums for solution to surge/thunk...found suggestions to grease u-joints
