2006 4runner. I took it to have the suspension looked over as the ride became soft with thumping on surfaces that are not perfectly smooth. If it makes any sense, it felt like the stopping distance increased. The car has sag in it while steering. The repair shop called back and said I should not move forward with the job as the car is unsafe due to a "completely rotted" 18 inch section of frame. I will be picking it up and parking it in the yard.

I'm not sure what to do. Do not have the lack of heart to trade it in and make it someone else's problem. Now I am seeing this is not uncommon. Will there be a fix? Recall? Already replaced everything else on the car to make it a perfect daily driver and now I am checkmated.

I have a 2006 Toyota 4 Runner with extensive holes in frame and it is not save to drive. I was on the highway going to work when the rear end starting swaying and wagging. Luckily I was able to pull into the median and avoid hitting any other vehicles. I was hitting my brakes and trying to control and blew out the meniscus in my right knee. I had hoped it was something like a bearing or wheel cylinder (something I could fix) Unfortunately after having it owed to repair shop and then dealership I was told that the frame was completely rotted and it was not safe to drive nor should I have been diving it with the condition it was in. I knew there was rust but never anticipated the extent. I have been driving a long time and have never seen anything like this. I contacted Toyota and have discussed this in length, but they will not offer any assistance. They claim that it has exceeded the warranty period, yet they did replace frames on Tacoma and Tundras well past warranty period. It is a major problem and they must be held accountable. I do not know what to do now. The vehicle runs great, body is great. Frame is shot.

Toyota 4 RUNNER 2006 V6 when the accelerator was pressed the back end of the car started to fishtail to the sides. On the road back of the car swings side to side and feels unstable ,unsafe and hard to keep the line. The vehicle was taken to a Toyota dealership where they discovered the frame of the vehicle had rusted and broke where the rear control/balancing arm to the passenger side rear axle attached.Also the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. Additionally, the vehicle has exhaust leaks in the exhaust manifold due to excessive rust and I have to repair it. The vehicle had been well maintained by the only ORIGINAL owner and the body is in near excellent condition. Car has no rust on the body but the frame is BADLY rusted.What to do? Toyota refuses help.

My 2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited has excessive rust corrosion throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle including but not limited to the frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and bolts/bracing.

I have meticulously followed the Toyota scheduled maintenance and taken great care of the vehicle.

Since purchasing the vehicle, I have had to replace both front axles (left & right) due to excessive rust at the recommendation of both the dealership and a third party mechanic. While driving, the skid plate detached from underneath the vehicle and was dragging beneath the car on the highway after the metal on the plate rusted out around the bolts. Similarly, the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. When I replaced the front brakes (pads & discs), I was forced to purchase brand new calipers because the current calipers were so rusted and seized and the mechanic could not reattach them. I have continued to use Toyota dealerships for scheduled maintenance and always sought out additional opinions from quality third-party mechanic shops. The consensus has been as follows: sell the 4Runner because it is excessively rusted would be a money pit to repair. Currently, the dealership has recommended I replace the steering rack and pinion due to leaks caused by rust. Additionally, the vehicle has duel (left & right) exhaust leaks in the exhaust manifolds due to excessive rust.

On multiple occasions, including the skid plate mentioned above, and when I attempted to have the differential oil changed, the dealership told me they could not perform the work because of excessive rust. I have struggled to find mechanics in California who are willing to work on my car due to the extent of the rust, especially in regards to the exhaust leaks. It has cost me thousands to repair and maintain, all of which is a result of extensive rust. The suspension and frame, including the shocks, struts, and bolts are excessively rusted and I have been urged to repair or sell the vehicle by multiple mechanics and dealerships, though the cost to repair would far exceed the cost of the vehicle. While searching the internet for solutions, I came across the ongoing lawsuit by Gary Weinreich and have since deemed it necessary to share my own experiences. All of the aforementioned is detailed in paperwork from the dealership (noted during my scheduled maintenance inspections) and supplemented by paperwork from third party mechanics here in San Diego. I would be happy to provide photos to confirm the above findings. The vehicle has 90k miles on it and has only been used on roads.

I was told by Toyota service center that the Tacoma frames have been replaced and that the 4runner should of been included in the frame replacement as it shares the same frame as the Tacoma. I was told to undercoat the frame asap to save what is left of my frame until Toyota does a recall, so I did the next day with a Rustoleum undercoat spray. I love my 2006 4x4 4runner it is a beautiful SUV the body is in beautiful shape not one speck of rust you would never know that the underneath is a ticking time bomb and fear every time I go over a bump in the road that the frame will give out.

I have owned this 4Runner for almost 2 years. I was aware of the frame rust for the Tacomas when the recall was released for them yet I did not anticipate my newly acquired daily driver to suffer the same fate. I am originally from upstate New York and yeah, I know all they use on the roads is salt for the ice and snow, yet I took preventive measures to protect my new pride and joy from the harshness of New York winters and roads.

Upon my first state mandated inspection of the vehicle the local mechanic said my frame will never pass the state inspection ever again without replacing or some serious reinforcement. I squeaked by the inspection and now I have moved to warmer climates of the southeast pursuing my career and even down here when I get my oil changed and my tires rotated the shops around where I live won't lift my car on their hydraulic lifts in fear of the frame.

Toyota needs to step up and fix their corner cutting mistakes as it endangers countless lives each and every day on and off the roadways.

Bought in 2014, had a bit of rust above window on the back hatch and surface rust on frame. Aware of the Toyota rust issues, had it undercoated since purchased. In 2017 my Mechanic pointed out a small hole that had developed near rear right wheel well on top part of frame. Closer inspection revealed that the interior of the frame was terribly rusted. Since 2017 more holes have appeared on the frame all seemingly originating from the inside of the frame. I've babied this truck and subsequently invested quite a bit of money into it, everything runs great but the frame condition is such that I no longer feel safe driving it. HELP!

Toyota chose to cut production costs and not properly treat the steel on the frame. So at 90,000 miles in 2014, my 2006 Toyota 4 Runner frame broke. Luckily I was backing up when the frame broke.

So I called the dealership service department at Priority Toyota in Chesapeake, VA where I bought the brand new vehicle, and the service guy laughed at me on the phone when I asked for a quote to replace the frame on my truck and told me they would charge $20,000 to replace the frame. It was clear that he wanted me to trash the vehicle and come buy another new car from them.

Instead, I found a reliable, professional body shop in my area. It cost me $5,478.63 to replace the rusted broken frame. Toyota claimed that the problem was caused by my fault of not washing the frame enough. Only later did everyone see that Toyota had lied about not properly treating the steel frame in order to cut their costs.

I will NEVER buy another Toyota because of this problem and treatment from Toyota. Now the courts are beating Toyota and forcing them to reimburse people. Toyota chose to pay lawyers fees to avoid including Toyota 4 Runners in their frame rust recalls on other models. But the damage to the public was too great, and now they are being forced to pay.

Toyota is using delaying tactics with the courts and appeals in order to reduce the amount of claims. Toyota is delaying the recall on 4 runner frame rust so that less vehicle owners will maintain their cost records and they are delaying so that more of the vehicles will just be junked prematurely. Toyota in the USA is another failure of American manufacturing showing a lack of competence and long term objectives by upper management.

When I was in high school, I drove a 1982 Honda Civic that was my dad's car, then my brothers car then my car. It drove for 250,000 miles with no frame problem. Now I don't know what car company to trust. But I know it will NEVER be Toyota again.
