CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

Within 1st year of owning the car the Moon Roof failed to operate smoothly, it was an intermittent problem. Each time the dealer looked at it they were unable to fix the problem. To me it sounds like the cable is binding causing the moonroof to bang when opening. Last time it was opened it failed to close properly, one side was lower than the other, as if it was off it's track. When opening it sometimes makes a loud bang, other times it operated properly. I haven't opened it for quite sometime for fear of not being able to close it. The car operates fine however it is disappointing to have a feature on the vehicle and not be able to use it. I did confirm similar problem with another 4Runner owner but wonder if it is truly common and if Toyota has fixed the problem without charge.
