CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

The paint is peeling off of the roof and hood......Signs are also starting to show on the side mirrors....... Paint on top of wheel wells is also discolored.........Toyota dealer says they know nothing about problem and refer me to body shop for repairs (at my cost).... I have been to 3 different body shops--they all say that it is problem with the original paint job---not enough clear coating.........To repair the existing areas, was quoted $3500-$6,000 + additional costs if some of the wheel panels have problems (which is almost assured) and extra $100 to remove the front window (if required)
Also, there will be no guarantees that the peeling won't reoccur in other areas....
I have had Toyotas for 40 years and have not had any problem with paint quality, but the more shops I talk to, it sounds like there was/is? a quality problem with Toyota factory painting..........Looks like I have bought my last Toyota -- too bad, the cars run forever, but don't want to have a stripped down paint job
Update from Jul 25, 2016: I had the top and hood repainted....Peeling is now showing up on all the parts that I did not have repainted
Seems like Toyota cut lots of corners and sacrificed their quality trademark
