The magnets which are supposed to be an integral part of the alternator rotor came loose. They are apparently held in place with glue, which failed. This allowed the magnets to break apart and destroy the alternator stator as well. This was an expensive repair involving new parts (rotor, stator, gasket, oil) labor and much inconvenience.
