XV Crosstrek

  • Manual transmission
  • 80,000 miles

I started hearing a grinding noise around 66,000 miles when I took my foot off the clutch and it would go away when I pushed it into neutral. Throw out bearing right!?! It cost $38.00 for one of those. But no! you have to pull the whole tranny to get to it. $1500 in labor. I would normally work on my own car, but I don't know this car and I have to spend money not time on my cars these days. I decided to have the clutch done (at a terrible place, I won't get into..) while they where in there. $2500 later I can still hear a little whine and that bearing will be going out soon, again. For some reason the throw out stays engaged when you let the clutch out and it is expensive to fix. Bummer 'cause I love my stick shift.

Update from Apr 2, 2020: The throw out bearing started getting real load around 80,000 mile. It was $1,500 in labor to pull the tranny and do just the bearing or $2,500 for the whole clutch set. It still make a squeeling sound when clutch is out. The bearing cost $38. Sonthing dosen't add up. Subaru should do better with warrenty on these. Rear wheel bearings went out aroud the same time.

XV Crosstrek 2.0L

  • CVT transmission
  • 70,836 miles

Subaru XV 2013 with CVT automatic transmission, bought it last July 2013 costing USD 28.500. After 2-1/2 years (50000 Km plus) started to hear grinding noise. Complain to local dealer and they said its normal. Used for a couple of weeks, then noise sounded louder and louder. Return it to dealer and they replaced with brand new transmission assembly after 5 months. Again, after 2-1/2 years around 60000 km, the same grinding noise. Dealer again advised to replace transmission assembly costing around US Dollar 9,600. Unfortunately the car now is out of warranty period.. Subaru XV really for me is the worst car I'd ever driven.
