WRX Premium Fa20dit

  • Manual transmission
  • 25,000 miles

This is my 3rd Subaru and 5th manual car. In the morning, particularly when it's cold, there is a significant throw out bearing noise while the clutch is engaged (pedal down). This happens in all gears and continues until the car has warmed up (~10 minutes of driving). I spoke to the dealership about this issue and left the car in overnight. They said they could not hear the noise.

WRX 2.0L

  • Manual transmission
  • 31,000 miles

Ever since the day I picked the car up from the dealer, the throwout bearing made noises until the clutch pedal was depressed. Maybe around 11,000 miles, they replaced the bearing. 2 days later it starting making noises as they told me that Engineering was looking at a fix. They never called. Around 31,000, clutch starting slipping in 6th gear (I have no idea how this can happen).

This car is driven daily and mostly on the highway. Please over 200,000+ miles on other manual cars and the clutches lasted 100,000+.

At first, the dealer was not going to cover the repair, but then called and said they would under warranty. Seems like a very common problem.

Had a whistling/whinning noise since I took my NEW car off of the lot. I thought it was the turbo(as i never owned one before) it turns out it was the throwout bearing. eventually destroyed my clutch...smoke everywhere...left me stranded.........they covered under good will.....this time...????????!!!!!!

WRX Limited 2.0t

Have a new 2015 WRX around 3,500 miles started hearing noise when depressing the clutch noticed when its damp and cool outside usually the first start up of the day recorded the sound called the dealer and brought it in left it overnight the technician heard the noise and said it was very faint and that if it didn't cause any mechanical issues it would not be covered under the warranty, so they did absolutely nothing. Subaru of America needs to fix this problem at once before the clutch gets damaged.

First oil change done and mentioned to dealer and tries to show them, they said there was nothing wrong, I go for second oil change soon but the noise is getting louder and lasting longer, not only cold start-up anymore

2015 WRX throwout bearing making a lot of noise on cold start, sounds like a dry bearing, clutch 2nd gear is difficult to engage smoothly, transmission feels off with clutch work, strange engine noises and excessive vibrations also incurring.

Strongly feel like I should have purchased a different make vehicle.

Update from Sep 4, 2014: subaru denied hearing the noise, I went in, they then proceeded to hear the noise after I drove 40 miles to get there, said it was sound of normal operation. BULLSHIT.

1 month later, throwout is much louder, appt scheduled next week.

ALSO, the center console lid will not stay down, any bump or turn will unhinge the release and it will come popping up (most annoying thing on the planet)

center consol lid needs to be completely replaced and also maybe the entire center console it's self.

first Subaru ever, sure to be my last.

Update from Sep 14, 2014: first visit to the dealership, they couldn't hear the noise until I drove 45 minutes to get there, then turned the car on, turned the ac off of full blast, turned the radio down and service advisor heard it, documented it as normal operation noise (seriously?). Three weeks later, noise got quite a bit louder, transmission was really stiff, car would shutter at low speed, clutch engagement points worsened. Made another call to the dealership, this time the mechanic drove and diagnosed the car with a bad throughout bearing, took the car apart and realized the bearing shards were all over the clutch plate and pad.

-replaced throwout bearing -replaced clutch plate and pad -replaced downpipe gasket (to get to clutch, DP had to be removed)

very pleased with over all service for the second time around, time is money and it was a clear shame that the issue wasn't appropriately diagnosed and resolved the first run around; however, regardless of outcome I was pleased with the quick and accurate turn around time on the vehicles service.

car runs great at this current moment

never got to run the car at it's smoothest until I hit 4,000 miles on the odometer, what a shame it was to be unaware that my car was acting up this entire time, it was a brand new car how the hell am I going to have a reference point of it's proper operational feeling.

I am however worried about the transmission, I drove 4,000 miles on a car with a bad throwout bearing and my gears still feel a little awkward at times.

negligence on the throwout bearing issue upon my introductory visit was a big mistake nonetheless, but the guys at Subaru were kind enough to not put more than 10 miles on my car during it's overnight stay.

issue solved within 48 hours from second visit on the same issue.

Update from Dec 21, 2014: on the third throwout bearing including the original that came with the vehicle......7k on the ODO fitzgerald subaru in clearwater fl has done a great job repairing the vehicle.

about 75 miles on the third throwout bearing, running smoothly. last time the TOB was replaced it went bad within 500 miles, so we shall see.

I will update if I hear any noises, or feel a difference within the shifting mechanism.

Update from Apr 24, 2015: Issue resolved, user error.

Subaru's vehicle was operating normally and user error was concurrent with issues listed above.
