I always get my car in for it's prescribed maintenance. We had to add a quart of oil around 6,000 miles on a trip. I also noticed some leaking of oil on the garage floor. So I took the car in for it's check-up to see what was going on and to find out if it was indeed an oil leak. It was worse than that! Evidently, in reading some of the complaints, this doesn't seem uncommon because Subaru uses a sealant on the cam carriers and the front cover of the camshaft rather than gaskets. It seems to be a not so efficient way to do it because many owners of Subaru Outbacks are complaining about this leak..

I had purchased an extended warranty for up to 72 months/75,000 miles, but had forgotten all about it. I then remembered I had the extended warranty. (Yes, I've lost some brain cells in my old age!) The Subaru dealer told me I couldn't use the purchased warranty because they had already started the work, and I should have had it inspected by a representative of the vehicle service contract before the work was started. The repair was very expensive, and I'm not sure it's really fixed. On our last trip, we had to add a quart of oil again at around 6,000 miles. I'm very discouraged about Subaru, and I probably won't ever buy another one.

Seems to me they should figure out this is not a good way to seal the cam shaft. It's too expensive for them to take care of their poor design, so they pass the ridiculous price to repair on to the consumer!
