CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Outback has a problem with excessive oil consumption.
A class action lawsuit is pending that alleges Subaru's "FB" engine has defective piston rings which causes oil to leak past the rings & burn up at an excessive rate. More information about the class action is available here.

Problem occurred with a Subaru-rebuilt transmission with just less than 100k miles. (Original transmission was replaced because Subaru tech cracked oil crankcase over tightening drain plug.) Only service and work (except tires) has been a Subaru dealer. Took to dealer because car acted just like an automatic with hard shifting although it’s a CVT. Dealer could reproduce, but not determine reason. Said drive until Check Engine light comes on then bring back. Light has never come on. I called Subaru about extended warranty and was told the expired in 2018.
Like many owners I have never had a transmission failure in any car I’ve owned much less one with <100k miles. (I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander with 170k miles.) other than the transmission and excessive oil consumption 1/2 qt/1-2k miles) the car is in great shape, inside and out. Dealer will not rebuild or repair transmission. Says it cannot get rebuilt transmission from Subaru or anyone else just from totaled car auction. Dealership is offering $2500 trade in. I guess Subaru is expecting this to be lost in all the other problems of the word. There are class-action lawsuits for cellphone battery fraud but nothing about this. I guess there is not enough money in it for the lawyers.
