CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Outback has a problem with excessive oil consumption.

A class action lawsuit is pending that alleges Subaru's "FB" engine has defective piston rings which causes oil to leak past the rings & burn up at an excessive rate. More information about the class action is available here.

My wife commutes 100 miles a day round trip and we traded in her mustang for something more reliable and to improve the gas mileage. At the current gas prices 5 mpg equates to about $40 a month with the average mileage. When we bought the car, the estimated MPG was 30 on the interstate and I think 23 in the city. Average was 26mpg City/HWY. Being an outdoor enthusiast, I have several friends who have the outback and love it. each person told me that they were getting at or better than estimated mileage on the interstate and they "keep up with traffic". I don't know anyone with a 2013, but I know several with 2010s and 2011s. In 2013, the MPG was increased from 29 to 30. Since we have owned the car, we now no longer keep up with traffic but drive a little slower than traffic. We have yet to see 30. Right now in the winter, we are getting 24 flat with pure HWY driving at 70mpg. We recently had the muffler replaced because the baffle broke in it, and we were hoping that was the cause, but it has not changed. We have had it back to the dealer at least 3 times for the MPG issues and we have been told a couple of things. (The driving style, The ethanol content in gas, the winter blend, the car needs to "break" in and it can take up to 12000 miles) The last time I was there, I was speaking with the service adviser and apparently her 3.6 gets 28 on the interstate (It is rated at only 25 on the interstate). She also mentioned that traffic usually tries to keep up with her. Also one of the sales managers just got a new 2013 identical to ours and he is getting 28 on his first tank of gas with mostly city driving. So with this evidence, something is wrong but no one including people on forums can provide any insight as to what is causing this. BTW, the mileage that I am quoting is based off of manual calculations, not the readouts.
