Purchased our 2009 Outback XT turbo brand new for my wife to drive, used only Mobil 1 or Rotella synthetic oil with oil and filter changes every 3700 miles. Had no mechanical or body issues at all until a rod bearing inexplicably spun at 35 mph on the number 2 rod at 78,500 miles. We've owned 6 Subaru's (4 were brand new) since 1979. Called Subaru Of America for assistance and after a 3 week review they advised they would not assist in any way with the cost of a new Subaru "880" short block.
They also refused to evaluate the old short block or perform an oil analysis. This will be our last Subaru ever as the newer Subaru's don't seem to be as well engineered as our other 5 Subaru's and there's no after the sale support for what seems a manufacturing or materials error on Subaru's part. Our other Subaru's routinely lasted for 150K to 300K miles with no major engine issues. We had the engine completely rebuilt with a new Subaru short block and will junk the car when the rebuilt engine fails, no matter the miles.
No more Subaru's for us due to engine quality issues and indifferent customer support.
