I have owned Subaru Outlbacks for many years with my last one being a 2003. I wanted another Outback but don't like that it was changed to a small SUV (despite what Subaru calls it) in 2010, so hunted and found a 2008, single-owner, well-cared for car. I drive over 600 miles every weekend so need a safe car.
I soon noticed the low beams were directed quite low so that you could not see much of the road. (The high-beams and fog lights are fine). At my next oil change, asked the mechanics (JJ's Auto, Seymour, WI) to see what could be done, if anything. They told me the bulbs and reflectors were positioned badly, that they had repositioned them and that the problem was resolved.
I was happy for 2 nights - then I had no low-beam headlights. Told it was a control module - that the lights were not grounding. Waited for the $300 part to come in (getting a ticket that weekend), then told not the control module but the grounding in the fuse box. That used, $300 part has been ordered but JJ's is not sure if it is the correct part for my 2008. If the part does not match/work, will lose another week ordering a new part from Subaru and will have to risk another ticket. If the fuse box is replaced and that doesn't resolve the problem, not sure what I will do.
