A leak in the head gasket started in 2013 with 59,000 miles on engine. This was verified by an independent auto mechanic. Outback was still under an extended warranty but Subaru dealer said they could not find a leak. Typical dealer attitude.
My mechanic cleans the engine each time I go for an oil change because he'd like to wait and replace head gasket at the same time he replaces the timing belt. This will cost apx. $3,000.
This is an ongoing issue for Subaru Outbacks and they should admit it's a flaw and issue a recall. Not sure if they've even issued a service bulletin.
