Gears would grind when shifting into 2nd gear & reverse. Would also pop out of 2nd gear when downshifting although not all the time. Dealer replaced syncer gears, covered under 5 year/60k powertrain warranty. Had to leave car for 2 days so a sealant could set properly. Shifting sometimes still feels a little rough but it's much better than before. I test drove another Subaru Outback & it felt the same - and from what I've heard, it sounds like Subaru clutches & transmissions aren't made well.
