My girlfriend rented the car in April 2015. She's in love with the brand but we saw some engineering issue at different places.
The windshield breaks out 2 or 3 times a year (Subaru even sells a 1 windshield a year replacement warranty). Water doesn't drain quickly enough in heavy rain and wiper jams on hard heavy snow. Wiper blades break away within 6 months. Water drains directly over the tower strut and rusts away. The hood started to rust around the bead's hole under the hood.
The roof skin is so thin that we already have bumps everywhere. The engine stalls twice on freeway without any reasons. We went to dealer and they told me bulls*** about the air filter getting clogged and a bad clip. The reverse gear is hard to shift all the time but the dealer said that they all do that. There is a big lack of horsepower when the A/C is on and it will almost stall if starting uphill. There is a smelly rotten water smell coming when we start A/C.
The brakes corrode overnight everyday even if it's not humid. The interior trim is biodegradable and is already worn out after 30000 km. Rear strut are down by 1 inch after 3 year, and I'm not carrying anything heavy or towing anything. Paint and clearcoat is so thin that (even if I do care about the car much) the car primer is visible at some point.
The luggage cover had to be changed twice because it doesn't stay shut and finally stays open almost all the time because it opens at each bump on the road. Heated seat works half-way on the passenger side. Washer fluid funnel is placed over electronics that can corrode easily. You need to replace the OEM light because it isn't bright enough. I am replacing the flashing bulb every year at least twice. It drinks 0w20 engine oil, 3 liters per 5000km. The dealer seems to find that funny and tell us that it's why they sell the pint at a cheap price (Subaru branded oil) even if the owner manual said that it must not take more than 2 pint every 5000km.
And finally some under chassis protection plates are loose and vibrating under the car, go figure. They will probably rust away like the rest of the car. In French we say Subarouille (SUBARUST), NOW I KNOW WHY! This rental was a try, and I think that next time we go away, a car manufacturer that knows how to paint and engineer a car that can face tough Canadian weather.
