The car consumes oil voraciously. The oil is supposed to be changed at 7,500 miles. I add one to two quarts of oil between oil changes. A mechanic said it had to do with the vacume. When your downshifting, the engine sucks more oil back into the intake and burns it. I'm not a mechanic, I dont know if it's true. I just know that I burn a lot of oil between oil changes. I've always driven manual, and had faster, more luxurious cars in the past that never had this kind of problem. I drove them way harder than I drive this econobox. .

This is my 1st new car & my 1st Subaru. I commute 120 miles a week to work & back and this car is my only means of transportation. After other previous issues with my car I am now using oil. After owning a late model Toyota with oil consumption issues I check the oil in my Subaru every weekend and after every oil change. I am currently between oil changes and my oil is about a quart low after only 3500mi. I do occasionally smell this burn off while driving.

I am scheduled for maintenance on 2/14. I will let the dealer know about the oil usage and start collecting the documentation that I need and put it with the others I already have. The Subaru dealer did open a tech file for me @ corporate when the service was completed for the problem I was having. I will provide an update after my dealer visit 2/14/15.

Update from Feb 16, 2015: Update- 2/16/15- My previous post says I commute 120 mi/wk. Its actually 120mi/day. I visited the dealer on 2/14 for service & notified them my oil level was low. He explained to me what was going on inside the engine and that oil usage was normal. First he said to me, do you want to do an oil consumption test. I thought that was rather fast to jump into this test. I said ok if that's what is done for diagnosis. The service adviser said we can start today. Of course, the reading that day was noted "cannot duplicate." I am to take my car back in 1200 mi to have it tested again. For me 1200 mi will be within 2 wks. Unless my car is burning more than a qrt of oil in 1200mi nothing will be done about this problem. I am concerned about the longevity of this engine since it is already using oil at 25K mi. I had a Nissan with 170K miles and it didn't use 1 drop of oil. When will someone put a stop to this. The automakers are aware of the problem and just keep making & selling these cars with oil consumption problems. They are ripping off the consumer and I am mad as hell. I will update again after my next test.
