I thought Subaru made a good car. I thought wrong, or just got unlucky. About 2 months prior I had the head gaskets replaced. Then I noticed a huge increase in oil consumption. About a quart every 250 miles. That was a loose bolt on the valve cover gaskets. That improved it to a quart every 750 miles. I work at a dealership, and one of our mechanics determined it was worn rings. After 150,000 miles. (For comparison my old '84 F-150 had 400,000 miles on its 302 before we had to redo the rings) So we had to rebuild the engine with new piston rings and connecting rod bearings. It still burns a quart every 1200 miles or so. I suppose its normal for a boxer engine to burn oil.
