CarComplaints.com Notes: Subaru thinks burning through a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so is perfectly normal. That's a crude stance if you ask us.

When I come to a stop, such as at a red light, with the transmission in D and HVAC system off, the idle speed will initially rest at about 700+ rpm, then gradually drop to about 600 rpm as long as I am pressing on the brake pedal. At 600 rpm there is a very noticeable vibration. If I set the parking brake and take my foot off the brake pedal, the idle speed will increase back up to 700+ rpms and become much smoother. If I have the HVAC system turned on, the lower end of idle speed will increase to about 680 rpm with my foot on the brake pedal and will feel a little smoother, but still with a little vibration. My searches have come up with a TSB issued by Subaru about a replacement alternator and tensioner pulley that are supposed to fix the problem of rough idle, but that is going to be an expensive fix. Really an irritating problem.
