CarComplaints.com Notes: Is burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles normal? Depends on who you ask. While Subaru says it's within "normal specifications," owners wonder why they need to top off their oil reservoir 4 times between every 5,000 mile oil change.

Noticed a burning smell coming from the engine while driving. Thought it might have been an alternator but the next day I noticed an oil spot on my driveway, inspected the underside of the vehicle and noticed there was some visible oil coated along the entire underneath of the vehicle, but no active leak. I then turned the car on and inspected again and found that there was a pretty major leak coming from somewhere in the engine - it was dripping out the bottom near the metal rock guard.
Luckily my dealership is very close so I took it in and they had the car for one day to diagnose the issue. The oil line feeding the turbo had rusted out and needed to be repaired along with many other small parts associated with the repair. They had to order the parts in and my car was at the dealership for a week.
This is the third thing on this car that has failed due to "Rust" (rear springs, oil line, rear trunk lift strut). It's only 6 years old. Maybe Subaru cutting corners on the material quality? Here I thought Subarus were like Hondas. Cost to repair: $1000 CAD + No car for a week.
