I brought in my BRZ for the valve spring recall. I explained to the service representative that the car was smelling of burnt oil when hot.

The mechanic found that the cam carrier gasket was leaking. The engine block was covered by engine oil and oil was dripping onto exhaust manifold. I guess there was also a leak at the cam cover gasket, but this one was planned to be redone when performing the recall, so no additional cost.

Subaru quoted 800$ CAD to fix the cam carrier leak. If I haven’t redone this gasket at the same time I made the recall (since the engine was already off the car), it would certainly have cost 1500-2000$ CAD to preform this repair. Subaru Boxer engines need to be removed from the car to perform that kind of repair.
