I HAVE A RED 2009 SMART FOR 2 CONVERTIBLE. I AM A SENIOR AND I SAVED 3 YEARS TO BUY THIS CAR. THIS MONTH THE PAINT CLEAR COAT IS BEGINNING TO PEEL OFF THE ENTIRE CAR. 2008 HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH RED PAINT AND THERE WERE RECALLS. I ORDERED MY CAR IN 2008, BUT IT'S A 2009. I'M CERTAIN IT'S THE SAME BATCH OF BAD PAINT. IF YOU GOOGLE, "2009 SMART CARS WITH PEELING PAINT" YOU WILL FIND MANY POSTS. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HE SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I CALLED THE HEADQUARTERS AND TALKED TO A MAN NAMED ADAM. HE SAID I COULD APPLY FOR A "GOODWILL OUT OF WARRANTY PROCESS". I WENT AND HAD AN ESTIMATE DONE ON THE CAR BY THEIR APPROVED AUTO SHOP. THE COST WOULD BE AROUND $2800.00 TO HAVE ALL THE PANELS REPLACED. ADAM CALLED ME TODAY AND INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE COSTS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE BAD PAINT COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF THE WINDSHIELD OR ROOF AS THE ADHESIVE IS LAID OVER THE PAINT. IF THAT PAINT BECOMES LOOSE, THE ADHESIVE WILL GIVE WAY. IT MAKES ME SICK TO GO OUT TO MY CAR AND SEE HOW HORRIBLE IT LOOKS AND IT'S AN EMBARRASSMENT TO RIDE AROUND IN. I CAN'T SELL THE CAR WITH IT LOOKING LIKE IT DOES, PLUS I DON'T WANT TO SELL IT. I WANT THE DEALERSHIP TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND PAINT THE CAR OR REPLACE THE PANELS. ADAM FROM HEADQUARTERS DID NOT REALLY GIVE A REASON AS TO WHY MY GOODWILL OUT OF WARRANTY WAS DENIED. IT'S CLEAR THAT MERCEDES DOES NOT SUPPORT THEIR CUSTOMERS. SO NOW, WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME HOW I LIKE MY SMART CAR, I GIVE THEM THE GRAND TOUR OF MY CAR AND SHOW THEM THE PEELING PAINT. THEY ACT APPALLED. I TELL THEM THAT MERCEDES REFUSES TO HELP ME OUT AND DO WHAT'S RIGHT - TO PAINT THE DANG CAR!!! PERIOD. I DON'T KNOW HOW THESE PEOPLE SLEEP AT NIGHT. ON A SECOND NOTE, I RAN INTO A LADY AT SAFEWAY AND WE GOT TALKING ABOUT IT. SHE STATES THAT SHE HAS HAD HORRIBLE EXPERIENCES WITH MERCEDES AND EVEN HAD A LAWSUIT. SHE'LL NEVER BUY A MERCEDES AGAIN AND SMART CAR IS UNDER MERCEDES. ANYWAY, THIS HAS MADE ME VERY SAD AND AS A RETIRED SENIOR, I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO HAVE IT REPAINTED OR THE PANELS REPLACED. I PRAY THAT THEY WILL DO WHAT'S RIGHT, BUT THEY WON'T. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. RUTH
