Heard bearing noise for several weeks, thought it was AC, but no, it was the water pump. Took it to a dealership to have it fixed....had to wait 3 days, so it costs me $807. with rental car.I hope this doesn't happen again. I have to say no other major problems with this car, runs like new again. Had recall on driver seat done at the same time.

I have owned 2 Scion XBs, 1 Scion XA, two first gen Scion TC's, 1 2012 Scion TC RS 7.0, and now a 2009 Scion XD. They have always been reliable and before buying the Scion XD, I researched Scion XD for problems and couldn't find anything. I owned this car for 11 months now and I was driving a 62 mile commute across the east SF Bay Area to San Jose, CA. I begin to smell a burnt rubbery fire type of smell. 2 minutes later, all lights on my dashboard light up and I see the red overheating button on, check engine light, and other lights on. I was able to slow down on the freeway, exit, park into an empty parking lot and open the hood. I saw that the tensioner belt was torn off the crank pulley/water pump area.

Luckily I used to live in this neighborhood in Union City, CA and it's one of the car/race meet up spots and also have a lot of auto shops in the area. I found a mechanic 0.5 miles away and waited 30 minutes for them to open. The mechanic showed me how the water pump was loose and had play and said the cause was water pump failure. I get ripped off by the mechanic because he tried to charge me 4.30 hours for labor and over $250 for parts totaling to $670. I talked him down to $600 and a free smog check. There's another guy that posted about this problem on this website for the 2008 Scion XD year and he posted this link

That link helped me understand that I wasn't alone in this incident. Apparently if you also look at the 2008 and 2009 Corollas (same engine as Scion XD) they also have this problem around 60-70 thousand miles. After the fix I have driven a few hundred miles so far and everything is normal again. Remember if you're overheating, don't run the engine if possible or let it cool down or else you will crack the block.
