Service Airbag Message. Started back in 2014 and was intermittent, however, in May 2015 it just stays on constantly. Although the wiring harness under both seats were recalled and fixed in 2012. This is a completely different problem that GM will not address on my vehicle or many others.
Diagnostics revealed 4 DTC error codes: B0081 0F - Passenger Presence System Erratic / B0081 39 - Passenger Presence System Internal Electronic Failure / B0081 3A - Passenger Presence System Incorrect Component Installed / B0081 71 - Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received.
The GM Dealer told me this was not a recall item nor a special condition for my vehicle. They quoted me $891.00 parts and labor. The Passenger Presence Module (PPM) that is inside the passenger seat needs replacing. The module is stuck in what is called (Plant Mode) and the on board computer is in (Real Time Mode). They are not talking to each other. The only way to fix this is to completely disassemble the passenger seat to get to the module, replace it, re-assemble the seat, install the seat, and re-calibrate the on board computer. You could find another seat and hope it's module works, but you are out the cost of the seat, taking a chance it's module does not work, and you still need re-calibration.
If GM does not fix this, people like me that have this problem WILL NOT have side airbag deployment, and very possibly no deployment of any airbags should their be an accident. Furthermore, an added bonus to this problem is the seat-belt tensioners may not work. So you may as well just be riding around with your family not wearing any seat-belts while the airbag system does not work (I am not recommending that but that is basically what you are doing anyway). Pretty safe huh?
One final note to consider, if you have this message you can go ahead and knock $1000 off the value of your car. It will be a tough sell when selling to an individual. If you trade your vehicle in, the dealer is going to appraise you down about $1000. If you love your vehicle and want to get it fixed, you pretty much have to go to a dealer because not very many mechanics out there like messing with the airbag system of any vehicle. Oh yeah, and the dealer is going to charge you about $1000.
