CarComplaints.com Notes: When it comes to the 2006 Ion, the biggest questions are: what big problem is going to pop up next? And how long until GM chooses to address it?
The 2006 Ion has a defective ignition switch that gave owners fits. Their keys would get stuck in the ignition, the engine wouldn’t shut off or in some cases it would shut off at the most dangerous time. The ignition was eventually recalled as part of one of the largest recalls of all-time , but it took GM 10 years to do it. Then there’s this car’s temperamental power steering which is prone to stop working randomly while driving. It too was eventually recalled, even if GM took their sweet time about it.
Lastly, it turns out a car built with plastic doors, fenders and bumpers – while fun for a game of “shopping cart bocce” – is horrible for safety.

OK, FOR MOST PART I LOVE MY SATURN 2006 ION. A COUPLE WKS AGO I LOCKED THE CAR TO GO TO CHURCH, THE ALARM KEPT GOING OFF, I THOUGHT MY HUSBAND WAS HITTING KEY SO I TOOK BOTH OUT AND HAD THEM ON SEAT, EVERY 5 MIN CAR ALARM WOULD GO OFF. WENT OUTSIDE CAR WOULD LOCK BUT HORN WOULDNT BLOW. SO OPENED DRIVER DOOR, THEN EVERYTHING OK. COUPLE DAYS LATER, LEFT CAR CAME BACK HORN WENT OFF ALL DAY. THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE ALARM FROM GOING OFF IS TO NOT LOCK THE CAR. NOW MY LIGHTS IN THE CAR WILL NOT GO OUT OR THEY WILL GO OUT ONLY TO COME ON A FEW MIN LATER. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS, I WOULD CERTAINLY APPRECIATE FEEDBACK. I CHECKED THE RECALLS, WEVE HAD TO REPLACE THE GAS THING BUT OTHER THAN THAT CAR HAS DONE WELL. OH AND THE DRIVER DOOR WILL NOT LOCK IF IM IN CAR THE REST WILL. PREPLEXED IN VA
Update from Jul 11, 2013: update to let you all know the fix...door switch was loose. so my car thought my door was open so thats why the horn would blow when alarm was on, makes sense now LOL. anyway, cost 17.00 including shipping to have the part shipped to me and now that we jiggled it, its working fine but i know its going to go soon and my husband will pop it out and put the new one in. you do it all at the door...hope this helps,
