broken rocker arm

I just found this site so I'm going to briefly enter all the things that have gone wrong with this vehicle during the first year of ownership. As the first year ended I could have enacted the lemon law but it was right at the cut-off date and I had other personal issues going on and did not wish to begin a court battle with Chrysler.

With only 1400 miles on this truck I got in one afternoon after work and started the vehicle. Immediately the check engine light illuminated and there was a lot of vibration from the motor. I drove to the dealership and it took them several days to diagnose the issue.

I did approach the dealership and request a new vehicle to replace this one given the severity of a broken rocker arm and how nervous that made me for any future problems. They slyly implied they would be able to do that if I would just contact Chrysler first. I NEVER SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO THEM!

Once I contacted Chrysler the ball was in their court and getting a replacement vehicle was out of the question. The dealership tricked me, I should have just insisted they replace the vehicle and call Chrysler themselves. Ultimately the issue was fixed and Chrysler paid for one month of my monthly payments as compensation for my troubles. This major issue ruined any joy of ownership I might have had in the truck and now I just drive it hoping it won't break down again until I can replace it with a non-Chrysler product in the future.

1500 Big Horn 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,455 miles

At cold start up 1455 miles, motor was skipping, shaking, ran perfect when shut off the day before. Has not been used as a truck, no towing, no load at all in bed, mostly short trips 25 miles or less daily, 45 mph or less, no high rpms, thru school zone every day. Also truck had a very bad pecking when new at first start up but quieted down minutes later. Wish I had gone to a different truck dealer, showed me broken rocker arm ...but he replaced entire right assembly shaft and w/ all rockers as an assembly on that side. Has run great since then ... Now afraid to go far from home.

At such low miles this shouldn't happen. I will monitor to make sure this doesn't happen again but seems like others are having the same problem.

Update from Dec 31, 2014: #5 Rocker arm broke. Dealer replaced under warranty with pushrod and could not figure out why it broke. Keeping an eye on it.

I bought a 2014 RAM 1500 on May 22, 2014. The truck experienced field failure, before the end of June of 2014. I was traveling with my Family, to finish up last minute details of my wedding. We were about 150 miles into our travel and the truck started going crazy. It started bucking, the lights were going off and on, and it was getting extremely hot. This was suppose to be a Brand new truck, but after 1800 miles it was obviously damaged. It was in the middle of the night, so my family and I had to allow the car to cool down, then we proceeded the rest of our journey, about 150 more miles. We did not reach our destination until around 1:30am, so I could not find out the problem until the morning.

I made some calls, but no one could answer them, so I took the vehicle to AutoZone. They ran the diagnostics and it said Chamber 3 failure. This was the beginning to the Nightmare I am living. I started making calls to the dealership, which had no answers. Eventually I was told to contact Chrysler. I started talking with a rep. and she told me the Certified Chrysler dealer I had to take the truck to get fixed. I brought the truck in and the service men were Dumbfounded. They couldn't believe this brand new RAM had already experienced engine failure. The service manager at that time, of course Chrysler had him fired, told me he would do everything he could to get my vehicle up and running. I took my car back on the agreed upon date, which was around a week later, because he had nowhere to store my vehicle. I brought it in on a Monday, he had his service men start working on the truck, then Chrysler halted the process. They told him they were sending a team of engineers to the dealership to figure out why the truck experienced the engine failure.

After 2-3 weeks of Chrysler not showing up, he was told to proceed. I would go in at least once a week, because the Chrysler reps. stopped calling me back when they said they would. The customer service is Horrible and they tell you lie after lie. The process went on for nearly 2mnths., then my lemon was fixed. I was in the process of the buy back process, but they wanted me to sign documents, basically acting like this NEVER HAPPENED!!! I will not lie so I still have the Lemon. I do have a copy of their standard release form because I am not a person who just signs paperwork without reading it. It is very Heartbreaking to know that Corporations are doing business like Gangsters, and demanding paperwork to be signed, asking you to NEVER mention that the field failure happened. I have the Lemon still because I have a conscience and I will not lie for anyone. I have everything documented and will be willing to share my experience with the World. My email address is carledouglas2@yahoo.com, if you would like to hear more.

Heard a "bang" while driving. Engine light came on. Truck rumbled like crazy. almost appeared as just a misfire. Had to have it towed via flatbed. Dealer was awesome with customer service and very apologetic. A+ for Monroe Dodge. Working with a case manager to get some towing money back as well as compensation for ruined holiday weekend plans. Again, without the great service from the dealer, this would have been a VERY frustrating experience instead of a quality of vehicle issue that I'm dealing with now.

Dealer replaced the rocker arm under warranty in 3 days and delivered my vehicle to me. I had a 2010 Ram and never experienced any issues with it.

Truck was brand new. I was traveling from Boonville, MO to Paris, TX when the truck started violently shaking whenever I attempted to accelerate. I stopped at a dealership in Nevada, MO, and was told they couldn't look at it, but I should be fine to drive it as long as the check engine light wasn't flashing. 20 miles down the road, the engine light began flashing. I called roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to Joplin, MO. The dealership put it on the diagnostic scanner and saw that #7 wasn't firing. They determined it was mechanical and removed the valve cover to see #7 intake rocker arm busted. They couldn't come up with any plausible explanation other than a defective part. The service tech installed a new rocker arm and sent me on my way.

I had the same problem at 991 miles, and Dodge "fixed" it by replacing with a new rocker arm. I was driving through Paris, TX and noticed that my fuel mileage was dropping off and there was a noticeable tapping on the driver's side of the engine. I tried to take it to the dealer I bought it from, but they didn't have any loaner vehicles at the time. I ended up taking it to the dealer where I currently live. I didn't get a loaner or rental until they had an official diagnosis of the problem, which didn't happen for another day. Hence, I was kicking rocks.

Long story short, the exact same thing happened in a three week period. I'm driving to Alaska in June, and I bought the truck so I would have a dependable vehicle for my upcoming move. My faith in Dodge is dwindling. They said they are probably going to just replace the whole head. I understand that I have a 100,000 mile warranty but the warranty isn't going to help me if I'm stranded in Bum Frick Canada or Alaska. I've read of others having the same problem on different cylinders. It would be nice if Dodge could find a resolution soon, or I might be trading my truck in on a Ford.
