I have a 2013 Ram 1500 Express with the 5.7 Hemi and 3.55 gear ratio, 6 spd automatic transmission. I took my truck in for an oil change and asked for a squeak from the engine bay that had just started to be looked into. It sounded very much like an idler pulley bearing squeak and at 95,000 miles I thought that was okay. They called me back the next day to let me know the noise was a lifter that was going bad and to let me know the quote to fix is was $3200.
I am the original owner and after driving through the break in period when new I switched to synthetic motor oil and have been using it ever since. The service department told me this wasn't too uncommon and that they could fix in in a couple of days.
I was more than shocked that a lifter would be going out this quickly. I know it's no longer under warranty but, this is a real quality issue and I have reached out to Ram and logged a complaint, they elevated the problem and said they were going to assign a case manager who would be reaching out to me. That hasn't happened yet so, we'll see how they handle this.
In the meantime I went to Youtube and found this has happened to others. I called around to some salvage yards to get prices on used engines just to compare to the $3200 quote the Ram dealer gave me and found they know of this problem with the 2013 model year 5.7L hemi engines.
A mechanic friend of mine recommended changing to conventional oil and adding a quart of Rislone to eliminate the noise. I did this over the weekend and the noise went away. Of course the wear has happened and the lifter is bad, along with the camshaft but at least the noise is gone. I am driving a spare vehicle for now.
I'll update after the case manager contacts me, and also if no one ever does.
