- Porsche Water Pump Replacement To Prevent Cracked Heads - These engines do not suffer from blown head gaskets. Typically intermix (oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil) is caused by a cracked cylinder or cracked cylinder head. If the water pump is not replaced as part of preventative maintenance, the plastic impeller can come apart and these bits of plastic get lodged in the coolant passages in the heads. The heads will usually crack 6-12 months after the pump is replaced. The solution is to replace the pump before it fails. Cracked heads should not be welded but rather should be replaced.

The first sign was water coming out the exhaust (white smoke) followed by a low coolant warning light. Then found oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil. Had the engine checked and found out either a bad head gasket or cracked head. Either way about $15K for a new engine.
