I purchased my 2006 Pontiac Torrent new from a dealership in Las Vegas and in 2007 shipped the car overseas to Germany. The car was shipped back to the states in 2012 and in 2015 I noticed a whining noise that appeared to get louder the faster I drove. At low speeds the noise was barely evident but at highway speeds the noise was loud enough to cause radio volume and normal talking difficult.

1st Response in Vegas performed a drive checkout with me and in their estimation they felt that the noise was caused by faulty wheel bearings. The mechanic forewarned me that in some cases wheel bearing hubs do get corroded and can be a bear to get off. I brought the car to him at 10am on Saturday and when it was all said and done he (and I) got the first hub off at around 5pm that afternoon! We decided that taking the second hub off would have to wait until Monday.

On Monday, the shop attacked the left hub and I was told that it took the mechanic approx. 3 ½ yrs. to get the remaining hub off. As you can see from the photos the corrosion damage was extensive. The fact that the car only has 64k miles on it makes me shake my head in disbelief as to how poor of a design this cars wheel bearing system is.

Total cost was approx. $1200 for labor and parts and given what we found I’m now concerned the back hubs are in the same or worse shape. With 40+ years of car manufacturing under GM’s belt one would expect a far more reliable design. If the wheel bearings failed at 64k I doubt the car will make it to 100k…

I had to replace both front wheel bearings at 60k. Now both the rear wheel bearings are making noise....only a matter of time to replace those also. Very disappointed. I do not hit the back roads or 4 wheel drive around to have a real reason for the part failure. Very costly.

This vehicle is 4 years old and only 132000 kms. The wheel bearing on the driver side was totally gone, It was showing totally instead of being covered. This problem caused problems with the brakes. I consider it to be dangerous as I was told the wheel could have come off. I am totally disgusted with the Torrent and I will certainly be very cautious about purchasing any GM product in the future. Appears to be Ford, here I come.
