Tracked it down to sensor which mounts in the lower dash knee panel. The sensor actually resides beneath the ignition key behind the group of small air flow slots. This car is equipped with climate control, and this is the driver side temp sensor which has a fan inside it (I guess to make sure it is getting active flow from the driver seat location).
I will add to this when and if I buy a new one.
