I have purchased a 08 Pontiac G6 3.5L V6. I thought that is the best and reliable car that I can afford to buy. But I was wrong. I was driving on a freeway (I5 south) all of a sudden I smelled something was burning. I was trying to pullover on a shoulder lane then next thing happen it felt that the steering wheel is getting hard. I was in a shoulder lane trying to see what happen then saw a fluid just dripping all over underneath. Luckily nobody got injured or anything on that moment. It could of been worse or somebody could of been killed. From that point everything went like chaos, because had to call up for a tow and buddy to pick me and my friend up. Then try to call GM's about the issue and told them about the safety issue which they never seems to care about and just ignored my complaints. I believed that my issue is a safety concerned which they should be fix it at their cost. It was a bad engineering routing the high pressure hose right against the exhaust system. Bad service on, I was disappointed talking to a representative which never represent their product.

When I bought the car used in May 2011 the steering was very tight and squeaked. Dealer said it was no problem and was probably just overtightened by the last mechanic.

Steering has since loosened slightly and the squeak has subsided revealing wheel shake, steering popping, and turn signal failure.

sometimes my steering tightens while driving , and the steering wheel moves on its own when i'm stopped . I'm afraid to take it on the highway at high speeds . Brought it to hickmans to get it looked at and they said they couldn't find anything wrong , but keep an eye on it . I wonder will they pay for the funeral if i get killed ?

Update from Jun 16, 2011: They finally fixed my steering . They said it was the power steering motor.

G6 V6

When you are parked or traveling at low speeds, the steering wheel will jump back and forth and the steering will become very difficult. It feels very unsafe to drive. Luckily it does not do it at high speeds. It also does not seem to do it after the engine is warm.

I noticed my steering being a little tight one day, I didnt think any thing of it. Untill one day i was driving to a friends house with the problem, when i pulled in the parking lot, my steering wheel went nuts, it was moving by its self. It only moves on its own while i am stopped.

We bought this car last fall - all has been fine till February when one day, sitting at a light the steering wheel started to move on it's own. We thought we where seeing things and has steadily gotten worse. One day I took the car to work ( this is my wife's car) because she was afraid to drive the car so I took it downtown chicago from Indiana. I left at 4am and it was snowing. I was very nervous. I thought that I was going to spin out so didn't go over 24 mph. Cars where flying by but I felt like there was no control of the car. So when it snows we don't use the car. There is no recall on this car and is very pricey to get fixed, between $700.00 - $2000.00 and that is more than we can afford at this time. So please if other people are having the same problem please report it so maybe it can get recalled.

Thank You Mike & Sari

G6 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

My G6 has steering problems almost every time it is driven. The electric power steering unit only works intermittently. The steering wheel also shakes when the car isn't moving as if a tire were badly out of balance. There should be a recall on this problem before someone is hurt.

Update from Sep 4, 2010: Just this week received a letter from GM saying there was a recall for the power steering unit. I have already paid $554 to have it fixed so I sent them that info so they will hopefully refund my money.

I brought the car to the shop for two reasons, the popping in the steering, which was covered under warranty. It was the same as everyone else's problem-steering shaft had to be replaced. I also complained about the tightening in the steering while driving. Of course it did not do it while the mechanic was driving it, so they don't know whats wrong. I don't feel safe when it starts, especially when my children are with me. It really feels as if the steering will lock up on me.
