Loss of steering = loss of control. Power steering will stop working, steering wheel becomes very difficult to control, steering wheel sometimes will turn itself hard left sending the car into on coming traffic, or hard right sending the car off the road, steering wheel will turn left and right by itself with no driver input. This issue is well known to GM. When will the NHTSA demand that GM fix these unsafe cars? this problem occurs intermittently, with no warning. Pontiac dealer says 2008 G6 is too new to be covered under the previous recall, they want $1500 to fix it and I want the recall expanded to include the 2008 models.

I own an 2008 Pontiac G6 2.4L I have not had my 2008 Pontiac G6 for a full year yet and the faulty steering issues started showing up in June. Steering to the left is very loose while steering to the right is very tight. While making a left turn I felt I lost some control over the steering. Too much play on the steering and I was not sure how much I needed to turn the steering wheel to make my turn safely. I became very focused on the steering performance after that and noticed that left turns were loose and the steering wheel moved loosely while on right turns the steering wheel was rigid and could not be moved and required more force in making the turn. I had the intermediate shaft assembly replaced in July.and the issues are still there. I have taken to the GM dealer and they stated this is how the electronic power steering should work how can intermittent and unpredictable loss of control of your vehicle due to mechanical malfunction not warrant a recall?!!!

For the past two months, my automatic 2008 Pontiac G6 has had power steering problems. The steering goes from fine to extremely bad several times a day. It is an intermittent problem that the mechanic at the Pontiac dealership could not replicate, so he sent me away, to keep driving in unsafe conditions. The steering wheel shakes uncontrollably at times. It binds. It steers in segments, making it difficult to drive in a straight line. This is absolutely a safety hazard!

The contact owns a 2008 Pontiac G6. The contact stated the brake warning light would illuminate each time the brakes were applied and pressure was lifted from the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five times yet they were unable to diagnose the failure the first 4 times. On the fifth occurrence of the failure, the vehicle was repaired under an unknown technical service bulletin. The failure did not recur. While driving at approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel became extremely stiff and the power steering warning light illuminated. The contact then began pulling on the steering wheel until the vehicle began to operate as normal. The vehicle was not examined for the cause of failure nor repaired. The failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 44,000.

2008 Pontiac G6 sedan - steering problems. Steering wheel jerking or twitching right and left while car stopped and idling. Rubbing or slight grinding noise from area of steering column. Intermediate shaft replaced by dealer. Ratcheting effect felt in steering when turning, steering wheel tightening significantly while turning, some kickback felt, as if car was resisting turning. Returned to dealer, who could not find source of problem. Problem occurs randomly, intermittently, and without warning. Significant tightening feel and hard to turn returned days later. Problem recurred, dealer replaced torque sensor and steering column. Again, problems returned within days. Took car to independent mechanic, who tried to get problem to reoccur. After testing and driving extensively, this mechanic had problem occur with him while driving, finding steering wheel very hard to turn. Described trouble as "inexcusable" and "extremely intimidating." Said car should be returned to dealer and replaced, or satisfactory remedy provided for apparent engineering problem, and said car unsafe to drive in this condition. Car now back at dealer, who finally experienced less pronounced problem with steering, and is now replacing the rack and pinion unit. Search online for "2008 Pontiac G6 steering problems" returned large number of complaints of same problems experienced with this car. Considering the number of these complaints and the previous recall of 2006 models for similar issues, this appears to be an engineering defect or manufacturing flaw which poses substantial, significant, and unpredictable risk to life and safety. Note: Mileage and date of reported "failure" is for latest incident. First occurrence in June 2010 and under 36000 miles.

I drive a 2008 Pontiac G6. I purchased it new. I have always heard noises that seemed to come from my steering column. I was told it was nothing from lots of people even mechanics. When I took my car in at 40,000 to the dealership for an oil change I ask for them to investigate. They come back saying I needed to replace my brakes. I stated it wasn't my brakes. Now at 50,000 miles and coming home from vacation in myrtle beach I notice my steering not cooperating. So going 80mph down the interstate I begin worrying. I took it back to my dealership and after an hour of investigation $88 from the mechanic they decided my power steering motor needs replacing at $467. Now I find online that this has been a long term problem with Pontiac G6S. I am still driving my car. What else can I do?? 2 week wait on replacement.

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 it began having a jerking problem with the steering wheel and after taking it to a local mechanic shop was told that it needed a new rack and pinion. After making this repair the car continued to have the same symptoms of the steering wheel jerking left and right while driving as well as while sitting still. This is a major safety hazard as the steering will jerk hard and you have to pay close attention to the steering due to not knowing when it is going to happen. Replacing the rack and pinion cost over $300 to fix. Took the car to the local dealer and they drove the car and stated it needed a eps motor and controller. Then was told that it would be over $600 to fix.

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6, and while driving there is a knocking or sounds like something is loose on the left front suspension. They have replace the steering shaft, sway bar links, still having the problem. Had it to the dealer 3-times. I am afraid something will break and cause me to wreck. Can hear it gook hitting a pot hole in on the pavement or going down a gravel road that has pot holes. If something breaks and causes me to wreck, I will pursue if still available I will sue the dealership for not correcting this. I am tired of spending all my time at the dealership, they are suppose to have certified mechanics, but they don't take enough time to really fix the issue with my car.

At 38,500 miles, have had multiple problems with steering, including 2 steering shaft replacements, steering gear replacement. Power steering will fail at various times while turning at low speeds. There is also a loud pop which the dealer diagnosed as the steering shaft, but is never fixed after replacement. Also had to have cv joint replaced at 38,000 miles due to failure. This vehicle has never been wrecked or otherwise damaged. According to the dealer, these are very common problems with G6's and should be recalled.

2008 Pontiac G6 steering problems. While driving down the road the steering became hard to control and felt like it would lock completely. I took it to the dealership. They said no problems were seen when hooked to the computer. No problems when they drove it. They said there had been problems with earlier models of G6 and cobalts. That's when I realized 2008 G6 should have been included in recall. I have had shake problems and a popping noise, and now the loss of power steering, which scares me to death.

I was driving my 2008 Pontiac G6 on highway at 55 mph and all of a sudden my steering jerked to the left. Scared the crap out of me. Has been doing it off and on for the last couple of days, you never know when it will do it again. It is a safety concern for me, had it looked at by a mechanic and he told me to contact Pontiac to see if there was a recall, no recall. This is a safety issue and I hope I'm not injured before its fixed.

Pontiac 2008 G6 with electrical power steering. Very difficult to drive. Somedays steering wheel moves and jerks, even when car is idling but not moving. When driving, the steering wheel jerks and moves on it own. You have to drive with both hands holding the steering wheel incase it decides to drive itself. Took to GM garage and they said front end steering shaft bad. Think that would have been $1500 repair for nothing. There have been problems with other years with electrical power steering, why not 2008. Please help!

My power steering keeps going out and when it does it is impossible to steer the vehicle. There are no events leading up to the failure other than regular light driving. According to the GM dealers representative GM can replace parts but history has shown it is temporary and will not fix the problem.
