Steering wheel started making a loud clunking sound when turning it more than half a rotation. Determined it was not dangerous and lived with it.

The steering makes a funny clunk sound when turning. Along with the noise there's other steering problems as well. I'm confused as to why my particular vehicle wasn't on the list for a recall as there were other steering recalls with the exact same problem and same year. This is a huge safety issue that is extremely costly to the consumer. It is obvious it was a manufacturing issue.

I bought this auto new from a dealer who has since gone out of business. The car currently has 41,000 miles. Have experienced a steering wheel knock every time I turn the wheel, even slightly, left to right. This has been ongoing for 6-7 years. Now I find that the steering itself is becoming tight. While checking to see if other Pontiac owners have experienced this problem, I found this site. I called a local dealer and they had no record of similar complaints, however this is an obvious Pontiac defect.

I wonder if a Class Action suit against GM is in order.

Took my car to three different garages only to be told the same answer that there was nothing they could do to fix the noise, it was just something I would have to live with. Of the three mechanics I went to only 1 charged. Me $50.00 to look at the car and tell me this, on the other hand the local Chevy dealer I bought the car from wanted to tear the steering apart and charge to over $1000.00 to fix something 3 other garages told me to just leave alone. Needless to say I will never purchase another car from the Chevy dealership in vermillion South Dakota and I will not purchase Pontiac again without first doing a lot of research. Also the emissions went bad and had to be replaced but that w covered under my full warranty whIch I had to argue with the dealership about and had to wave the full warranty in their face when they said there was no way they sold me a full warranty when in fact they had!

took 2007 G6 to dealer Dec. 2009 and complained about the popping in the steering at low speeds. They said there was nothing they could do about it. They did nothing.

Update from May 20, 2014: in 2013 garage did $700 of work on front end and the noise stopped for a couple of months, then started again. Popping noise in steering is getting wors.

My G6 had been making a clunking and popping noise when the steering wheel was turned hard. Worse at low speeds, so it sounded horrible when parking. My mechanic told me about the problem with the steering shaft, but told me that sometimes lubricating everything helps prolong things before a repair is needed. I had him do that in May 2012 and the noise has stopped. I am planning that I will have to replace the steering shaft and ball joints, but at this point the car has 63,000 and the clunking still hasn't returned.

Update from Mar 27, 2015: My G6 is now at 88,000 miles and since I had the steering shaft lubricated the clunking and popping stopped and has not returned. My mechanic told me there was a design flaw in a number of GM models 2005-2008s and that sometimes lubricating the shaft solves it, but if not replacing the steering shaft and ball joints is the solution. I had planned to replace them, but after having the shaft lubricated at 63,000 I haven't had any problems.

Clicking, thumping, popping, sticking, squeaking noise from steering, especially at low speeds.

Came to this website to find out if others have same problem. Well plenty do.

I will take to dealer for fix very soon.

Disappointed in GM for letting this linger.

I just bought this car and I like it but I noticed a pretty loud clunk behind steering wheel when accelerating from a parking spot with wheel turned. It also shudders very bad when slowing from interstate speeds and feels like it wants to veer into other lanes. Not feeling good about my purchase right now as it is out of warranty. I saw all the reports. Is GM going to do anything about this??

I have a clicking noise when turning steering wheel. On one occassion the steering wheel wouldn't turn. I had the car into the dealership on 2 occasions being told it was the steering shaft. I took the car for second opinion I was told the same thing. I had the shaft replaced along with the rack and pinion. I pick the car up to have the same problem. For as much as I was charged for the car new and for as many people that are having the same problems it looks as the dealer would fix the problem for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I brought my car to D & S Motors in Rugby ND and everytime they said my car was fixed there was another problem with it right now the dealership is just guessing that it is the rack and pinion on my car but I brought some many times plus I contact GM executive here is there phone # 313-667-7153 and they willing to pay half the cost but at the end GM is building lemons and not taking responsbility for recalling them are fixing them. I already told GM I am better of going to a bush mechanic instead of there certified mechanics but GM is really just building junk and pawn it of to consumers at high prices

The steering wheel started making a clunking noise at about 25k mi. It was involved in a wreck and the steering rack along with other underbody parts were repaired by Allstate at a body shop. One year later the clunking started again and was repaired (steering rack) free of charge by the body shop. One year later the clunking started again and was repaired a third time today (steering rack) by the body shop for free but I was told they wouldn't do it again because the replacement parts were likely defective. They were told by the GM dealer that this has been a problem for a while but there was never a recall for it. My G-6 now has 40000 miles on it and is in otherwise perfect condition. I called the local GM dealer myself and they said they don't know of any recalls for this problem and I have never been contacted by GM concerning a recall.

I purchased my Pontiac G6 during March 2007. I do not recall the exact dates but I have had the car into the dealership at least 5 times to address the 'clunking noise'. 4 of the times occurred while the car was still under warranty. I believe they replaced the steering column the first time and that fixed lasted, as I recall, only a few months. The second fix, I believe, was simply to grease parts. This lasted only weeks. What has been most frustrating to me, especially after learning of the frequency of this problem, is knowing the number of times I have taken my car in only to have them tell me a tech drove it but did not experience the "clunk". I was told this a couple of times, before taking the tech out myself and pointing it out as it happened. I took it back the last time now about a year ago when the noise had gotten worse then ever and was told a final time 'We didn't notice the noise". I have just been too busy to take it back and have been living with it.

I bought his car new for my wife thinking it would be reliable. At 17,000 miles the electric steering started clunking when turning corners. I'm going to see what the dealer or GM will do about this. It could be a safety issue. If GM or the dealer don't make this right I will never buy GM again, period. Then told me it was not covered warranty but might fix it for good will. Waiting for replay. No wonder GM went bankrupt.

If they don’t make problems like this right it might happen again. I have purchased two new cars since and they are both much better quality. One is a Ford the other a Kia. I would love to support GM in the future, but?????? Stay tuned. Bad news when Kia beats GM for quality.

I think its funny that people are complaining about the noise, and everybody says their dad is a mechanic, or husband, or brother, or uncle. If they are a MECHANIC why bring it to the dealership when they can fix it for you? Just curious. GM hasn't made this shaft a recall yet because it is just noise issue not a safety issue which I was told by an engineer. GM has redesigned the shafts for cars and trucks to correct this problem. there is no RECALL, or anything else I am aware of to get this fixed with out a warranty, be it factory, or after market. and we as TECHNICIANS understand these problems and are giving feed back to the manufacturers to correct these issues for you as consumers. Just because somebody can change oil, rotate tires and put spark plugs in, does not mean they know everything about cars.

NOT STEERING CHECK YOUR BALL JOINTS!!!!! Been hearing a noise in my steering, took it in they said it just needed lubed up in the steering. That lasted about 2 weeks and the noise got louder and louder, started to concern me because my children ride in my car. Well my Husband is a mechanic and finally I told him to look at it. He Checked all the wheels and come to find out my Passenger Side front ball joint was broke and my tire was getting ready to fall off.. So I called the dealership and my car was out of warranty but they said they had the part and fixed it for free.. So I thought it was strange they had that part in stock, thinking this isn't the first time.. SO ANYONE with that noise because I swore it was in the steering, my dad is a mechanic also and I could of swore it was steering and it wasn't so!! have them check your ball joints because that is serious stuff.. I'm so thankful I had him look at that and wanted to share with everyone that is hearing a noise also..
