CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Getting the Pontiac G6 was my dream car until now. I was driving on the interstate with my son in the backseat than while getting off a exit that had a curve the power steering went out on the car. I almost went off the railing and my son was terrified. This is unacceptable the power steering goes out one mintue than is right back to normal the next. But now it's to tight and I can't hardly drive my car. This is some bullshit for real, I called the GMC dealer to fix it and he tells me nothing can be done. The only thing is to replace all the parts to the steering column. GMC needs to have a recall on the Pontiac G6 instead of leaving the owners in the dirt. So Pontiac G6 dealers please make complaints ro GMC about this so we can get a recall soon.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. I was going down the interstate at 75 MPH and my power steering quit. Some good times. My radio display flashes power steering. I can get it to work again by turning my car off and then back on. I have had this problem for a couple months now, not everyday but enough to piss me off. My G6 is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. This is one of many issues I have had with the car.

So the power steering warning displayed on the dash several times since I've bought the car, and I thought it just needed more power steering fluid. Turns out power steering fluid is not needed now since the car uses sensors, expensive, computerized sensors. I only have 35k miles on my car, but am out of the 36 month warranty. $520.00 to fix the faulty sensors. On the news the very same night I find this out from my dealer, I hear about the recall for the power steering that GM has put out, but what's this, my G6 isn't on the list. Obviously this problem is affecting the G6 as well, so why won't GM extend the recall to ALL models affected??? I've love my G6, but GM has turned out to be a pretty sheisty company by not doing right by their customers. Ford never hestitated in recalling issues I had on my old Mercury, maybe that's the company I should do my future business with...

We tried to get an appt. to have the steering issue fixed before the warranty ran out 10/08, but, they brushed it off and said it was alignment and the warranty did not cover alignment. When we took it 2 months later and at 38,000 miles, to have the annual state inspection done, it failed inspection. It needed new ball joints, which it had been in the shop for 08/08, and we were told the wheel noise was the tires. Also at that inspection appt, we were to have the alignment done. To our surprise, we were told no alignment - we needed the electronic power steering control replaced.

I have contacted GM and they never got back with me, but, I tried again, since the Toyota mess and the new GM recalls, GM says - if we get an estimate for repair and pay for that ($75, I just checked) they MIGHT help us out on the repair. Now there is a word -- "MIGHT!" So what do we do -- take it and have $75 in the estimate and triple what any other mechanic will charge for the repair - with the hope that GM "MIGHT" help us with the cost? Do we wait longer for a recall, or try to have our local mechanic fix it at his price? Either way, we just pray the steering doesn't go out while we continue to drive it as we can't get rid of it -- it it our baby forever!

Started noticing the wheels are hard to turn. While checking online for the mfg service recommendations found out other owners are having some serious issues with their G6 power steering. Plan to get my checked out before it becomes a larger issue. Wanted to say thanks to this site for disseminating important information.

This car really SUCKS!!! I have had this problem with my power steering for quite some time now. If Pontiac knows that it's defective, why won't they just fix it? This is really bad business!! I mean why should I have to pay over $700 to fix a problem that they know about, it's obviously their fault, but they ignore it....That's INSANE!!!!

My g6 is a piece of sh*t! My steering goes out ALL the time. Just the other day, when it was snowing, i was on a off ramp and my steering went out and i drove right into a ditch. Im pretty sure if the steering did not go out i would have been fine. It goes out atleast once a day. Its a pain in the ass to have to turn my car off then back on just so i can steer my car. I dont have the money to have this fixed..and its ovious that the steerings bad when they already recalled the g4s and g5s...so how about the g6!!!!

We have had our 2006 G6 since April of 09. This problem just recently showed up in the fall of 09 and has happened 3 times to us. Once while driving, luckily under 25 mph, and twice while parked in a parking lot. My husband was lucky driving and was able to get the car in the parking lot to turn it on and off to reset it. I thought it was just a random thing but then it happened twice more. It was happening about once a week. We then had a minor fender bender and our car was in the shop for a while. We have had it back now for about a month now and no problem yet.

I am hoping GM will include the G6 in the recall because I do not feel safe driving my car knowing other G6s are having the same problem. We have a baby on the way and my husband will be deploying soon and I do not feel like I can handle the car if it does this to me on my own.

The power steering light comes on, the "power steering' quits like everyone else has mentioned...so far, at low speeds...no recall on 06 G6's yet, however this morning on Fox news & yahoo they announced a recall on several models[ Pontiac] with guess what,STEERING PROBLEMS!!!! Hello GM ....also reported 14DEATHS as a result ...my wife drives this car daily , so I'm very concerned...just learned this morning, reading your site, that this also happens at high speeds...I'm sorry, I told the mechanic this morning, I don't have $700.00 to pull out of my ass to fix an obviously NOT RARE problem that the dealer mechanic says he,s 99% sure fixes the problem...the other 1% [ steering motor is a mere $500.00 ] gee,I sure feel better now...lets find a way to solve this now, before anyone else gets hurt or KILLED... I'm open to any suggestions....Rick O Alvarado,Texas usa

GM is issuing a recall for several models due to faulty power steering, but NOT the 2006 G6. This vehicle has the same issue. I had it happen to me and there are many cases of it happening nationwide. Why is this model not being included in the recall? I had the issue and Pontiac refused to cover it. Why are G6 owner5s getting the shaft?

My wife has been complaining about this issue for a couple of weeks, so today was the day for me to top off the power steering fluid right? Wrong! After going crazy trying to find it, I jump online and find out about this engineering debacle that GM has forced on unsuspecting consumers. We will call our local Pontiac dealer tomorrow to see about any extended warranty they have record of, but we have not received any notification of it. Has anyone else?

So, while driving my fiance to the doctor, I get a ding, ding, ding, and look at the DIU. "Power Steering" was flashing in my face. Oh, great, I thought. I tried turning, and it was hard as hell to turn.

So, I started doing my research when I got home (after freaking out). Turns out, EVERYONE I see has this problem. The only thing I'm grateful for is having the money to get it fixed.

From what I read, I have to replace the steering column. Great!

I say GM just needs to recall all this and give us new cars. Thanks GM, for killing me in the long run.

Where is the recall GM, we know there is a problem, all of america knows there is a problem with your poorly engineered Electric Power steering. from G6's to cobalts to g5's to saturn cars they all have the same safety hazard that causes accidents or near accidents. My wife almost crashed into the woods on her way to work when the power steering cut out on our 2006 Pontiac G6. Customer service from GM told me on many occasions they are unaware of any problems with the power steering problems in G6's; nice way to cover up major problems. $700 dollars later our car is somewhat safe to drive again but it still doesnt feel right. The intermediate shaft still clunks very loud during all driving conditions and apparently this is in all GM cars over the last 12 years or so, sometimes it sounds like the front end is going to come off. The whole steering system is an engineering POS.

power steering is faulty

I have had my G6 since the 60,000 km mark. I had previously put on a complaint on here with detailed of what happened so this will be short.

Car had previously been causing problems with the steering but nothing for a few days. Drove the car for 15 minutes til the problem occurred. Ding ding ding, power steering message shown. Steering crapped out on me again. What a pain in my arse!!!! WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP!!! at least the part or even the car itself. So i drove it for a bit to see if it would do anything to reset, but to no avail. Before restarting the vehicle, i did 2 test turns in an empty parking lot. EEK... what creaking, groaning, stiffness there was. In reality sounds like the rack is going to snap off to tell you the truth!!!??? but GM says not a SAFETY ISSUE???? REALITY CHECK PLEASE???

I bought my G6 new in 2006. I've had a couple of problems here and there, but nothing that I thought was too ridiculous to fix. I live in Iowa and it is super cold right now. It seems like every other day my power steering just stops working and it is nearly impossible to turn. When I push it to turn it feels like I am going to snap something. I was told to fix the problem they have to take off my WHOLE dash and the repairs can be up to $2,000. I had a Chevy before my Pontiac and I will be sure that I NEVER buy a Ponitac again. My Chevy Caviler was a 1998 and I own it from 2004-2006 and I really didn't have any problems with it. it cost me $2,000 compared to my G6 which was $20,000. Ridic. I hope this recall problem gets solved, so I can get it fixed for free!
