This is probably the worst car I have ever owned. Its a beautiful car. When it is running properly, it is outstanding, however that is seldom. Unfortunately the steering problem is the same as everyone else is complaining about. Fortunately the steering glitch has only happened on the road once, that was scary, cause I was on the highway going a good speed, when I couldn't steer the car and it headed into the oncoming lane of traffic despite my best efforts. As I crossed the center line the steering assist came back. I pulled the car off the road and called the dealer, who dispatched a tow truck. Like usual they could find nothing but a problem with the vehicle computer. They charged me $76, and the steering came back to life. Thought it was fixed, but it has failed repeatedly since then, fortunately only in a parked situation. I can't afford another car right now, but as soon as I can, thats it for this monster.

Hi guys,i bought a 2006 Pontiac G6 a year ago and i noticed that at times my power steering would be lost causing my steering wheel to become very hard to rotate.I ignored the problem till recently when i was taking a left turn and this problem occurred causing my car to spin,luckily there was no damage.So i started to look online and got to know tat there was a recall from GM for this problem but only those G6's with a certain VIN no. are eligible for this.(for info on theVIN no.you'll have to go and check out with the dealership) and of course my cars VIN no. was not in the recall list.So,now i wanted to get this prob fixed and i went to a mechanic who charged me $90 to check wt was wrong (as opposed to GM dealer's charge of $125/hr),he told me tat this prob. could b fixed for free as per GM's special coverage adjustment 10183 (T5780).So,my cars steering column was replaced for free and now i hope i will not have the same prob. again.Anyone out there looking to get this prob. fixed should inquire about this coverage @ their local dealership and if one of the dealer is not willing to fix the prob. do try @ another dealer because this happened with me.Also there are some conditions that you're car should fulfill to be eligible for this coverage one of which is tat it should have less than 1.60k Km on it.

I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH MY CAR EVER SINCE I GOT IT. ITS GORGEOUS AND VERY SPORTY, HOWEVER, TODAY MY STEERING WHEEL FROZE UP ON ME AS I WAS DRIVING. AFTER THE CAR STOPPED , I SAW "POWER STEERING" APPEAR IN THE MENU. I COULD CUT MY CAR ON AND MOVE THE CAR A COUPLE FEET, THEN IT WOULD FREEZE UP AGAIN. THOUGHT I WAS OUT OF FLUID AND AFTER MANY ONLOOKERS SEARCHED FOR A PLACE TO ADD PS FLUID "THERE WAS NONE." SO PISSED OFF, BCUZ I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED HOME WHEN IT WOULD STILL START--JUST COULDN'T STEER OR TURN. I HAVE OVER 125,000MI ON IT AND DONT KNOW WHERE TO TURN. IF YOU ANYTHING ABOUT THE CD PLAYER ALSO , PLEASE INFORM ME, I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PLAY MY CDS. BEAUTIFUL CAR, BUT A HEADACHE TO FIX.

I purchased my vehicle in October of '08 but never really had a major problem until recently. Whenever I turn my steering wheel all the way to the left or right the power steering light comes on and it becomes hard to turn the wheel. So I have to turn the car off then on again in order for the steering wheel to work properly. I received letters in the mail about "special coverage" from GM concerning issues with the power steering and the catalytic converter. But this coverage isn't so special because it only covers you if you meet certain guidelines. In my case, the car has to have 120,000 miles are less and I'm at 122,000. What I don't understand is if the issue has to do with GM producing a vehicle with faulty steering why should I have to pay anything for it? I talked to a rep. and she told me to take it to the dealer for a diagnosis, which costs $90. I'm not paying a dime for anything because the issue is clearly not my fault. So right now this rep. is in talks with the GM dealer to perform a "goodwill" service on my vehicle. We'll see what happens...to be continued.....

driving on highway when the car starts dinging and flashing "POWER STEERING" Was able to pull over even though the steering wheel was locked up. after turning the car off and on several times, i was able to get off the highway and make my way home slowly. my husband bought power steering fluid only to find out that its electric! this has been occuring occasionally for the past year. however, this morning, i was unable to make it work no matter how many times i turned it off or on!! it really is a POS car that needs to be recalled! GM needs to own up to its mistakes and correct it. If they dont then a lawsuit is our only solution!!

My power steering has went out on my G6. Went to have it serviced and the mechanic gave me an estimate of $800-900. Came home, went online and saw all the complaints regarding this issue. Called GM explained my situation. The lady asked for the last 8 of my VIN and about my mileage.She told me that I was sent a letter to the address they had on file, but immediately started backpedaling about the mileage. I am at 104, 718 and I explained to her I didn't care about there being a mileage cap since I was only 4000 miles over and that when they sent the letter to my old address I was over 100,000 miles. She told me I could pay for a diagnostic ($100) and then to contact her back.She also implied this is my fault because " I didn't notify GM of my address change" Who in the hell calls a dealer to say they have moved? I don't go to the dealer to get anything done because of the wait. I cant wait hours just to get my oil changed.

I am calling my dealer to raise hell. I don't feel like I should pay anything for a diagnostic. They can put the part on that they know is faulty and if that doesn't fix the problem, then I'll pay for a diagnosis. With all the problems I've had w/GM(traded a POS Bonneville for the G6) I cant buy another American Car. I don't have the patience or energy to fight them anymore.

When I bought my car I noticed it pulled to the right. I had the tires rotated and the car still pulled. I was told the tie rod end was bad to replace it. I did and it still pulled. I then had them change all tie rod ends and align the car. Two days later started pulling again so I went back to have them realign it lol. the guy said my rack and electronic steering was shot. fix would cost around $700 bucks :'o I cant afford that while making car payments and insurance on a car I just bought. So I didn't do anything and have had to replace tires often cause they wear out constantly. Recently my power steering fluid light has been coming on and I lose steering briefly (pretty d@_n scary). Has anyone found out if GM will fix this or has their insurance maybe found a way to cover repairs, any help please ... Thnx JT

I am driving my car and suddenly I go turn and my power steering wheel goes out and now its always without power steering! Its a pain in the ass! I am a single mom with kids, cant afford to fix it, cuz I barely work part-time and still have a $350 payment each month. I am about ready to give up paying it and letting them take it away. ITs a death trap and a recall needs to be issued, or are they waiting for someone to die from it before they do that. I swear had I been told it was electric power steering and all computerized I would never have bought it. I feel it should be disclosed at time of purchase. Ridiculous! I loved my car til this happened, now I am scared to drive it. Its too hard to drive! Somebody get this recall issued please!

I am looking to ditch this car, but I figured I would try to get an estimate on how much it would cost to get the car fixed. I came on this site and read some of the complaints about the power steering. One of the complaints sounds so much like mine, that I had to see if I wrote it. This car used to be great, but the steering has the potential to cause a bad accident. I am constantly turning the car off when I get to a red light and restarting it to get my steering control back. I am going to give up the car and take a hit on my credit. It sucks.

On my way to work this morning doing approx. 65 miles an hour looked down saw power steering on radio display. Loss power started to panic got in far right lane and coasted at 60mph. At work asking alot of guys first thing they said was power steering fluid, looked at manual at lunch popped hood no reservoir i was lilke wtf..Started vehicle drove around parking lot what a relief it was ok...On my way home did it again..Went to my mechanic old school he said aint no power steering on this car..Found this website saw all the complaints call ed dealer. He said to call General Motors and complain .. to no avail i have too many miles on vehicle. I was told to wait he is going to ask them if they would help me..He sound like he really cared..Yeah right.. I know I am screwed..Driving this car is dangerous hope i dont die before i can save up money to get fixed.. don't want this car anymore. ricky in Baltimore

I am reading about all the problems of the Pontiac g-6 with the power steering. I started hearing this noise like something was loose and tapping and then it started shaking a bit in the front where the steering wheel is, well today when i started it the steering was locked and couldn't turn the wheel i turned the engine off and on several times and then i had the power steering back but when i am sitting at a light the steering wheel shakes and wants to move back and forth by itself. Since there are so many people having the same problem after what appears 50,000 miles sounds like a dealer problem. i am concerned.

While driving on the highway in the middle lane, I heard a dinging noise as if I were low on gas (I wasn't) and at the same time, it became extremely hard to steer. Luckily I did not wreck and was able to pull safely to the shoulder. The information center read "POWER STEERING." I turned my car off and restarted it and the problem seemed to go away. I pulled back onto the highway only to have the same thing happen 10-15 minutes later. I was EXTREMELY blessed that I did not wreck or cause an accident due to Pontiac's problem, not mine. I held onto the letter that Pontiac sent to me over the summer about the "loss of power steering assist caused by electrical input signals within the steering column assembly." In bold, underlined type, it says not to bring your car to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition described. So basically, wait until you suddenly lose your power steering and possibly cause harm or death to yourself or someone else. I will be contacting the dealership first thing tomorrow. I did report this to Pontiac's customer service. The rep I spoke was very nice and wanted to help me, but when explaining I felt completely unsafe driving my G6 and that I was basically stranded over an hour away from my apartment, all her manager could say was it was too far out of warranty for GM to authorize a rental and "be careful." HA! Seriously?? I feel that I should be compensated since I am very inconvenienced! As I have read on plenty of other forums, it is common to have to jump through many hoops to resolve this dangerous issue. I hope I don't have the same experience! If anyone can offer any advice on how you handled your issue, let me know!

My steering system was deemed unsafe to drive by a professional mechanic. The ball joint which attached my tires and steering system was faulty. I risked losing suspension and control of my steering if it was not fixed. Very disappointed in GM. This is my 3rd car with them. The first 2 driven for ten years with nothing like this. I guess its time to change to another company since GM wont even recognize that there is a safety problem. Too bad..., I live near Oshawa, Canada and dont want to see any more auto jobs leave us.
