CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

ON MANY OCCASIONS AS YOU ARE DRIVING THE AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF, ALONG WITH AN ALARM AND A WARNING ACROSS THE RADIO DISPLAY STATING THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAGS. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THERE IS A PASSENGER OR NOT, IT DOES IT ANYWAY. I'M AFRAID THAT THE DAMN THINGS ARE GOING TO DEPLOY ONE OF THESE TIMES WHEN I AM OUT DRIVING FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

on star has notified of us of a problem but we cant seem to get help with it. i feel gm should fix this since they claim the bags wont deploy. maybe we all need to get something together so they know this is a serious problem

I am really disappointed in my Pontiac G6. I have had numerous issues with it since I bought it 2 years ago. The cruise control and horn don't work. It says to service air bags soon. The CD player doesn't work. There is a vibration when I go over speeds of 40 MPH. The button to open the trunk from the inside of the car stopped working. I have water damage in my car from it leaking from goodness knows where. The list goes on and on. I am a college student that doesn't have a lot of money and I can't afford to take it into a dealer to have it looked at for these problems. It is so frustrating. I wish I never would have purchased this vehicle. Even the pain on the buttons of the radio has peeled off. What kind of materials did the manufacturer use because things like that shouldn't happen.

Every once and a while my airbag light comes on. Not really sure why, but it flashes and dings. The next time I start the car, it's off. Then a few months later, it will do it again.

this is kind of scary driving my brothers car cause his airbag light comes on he said it comes on then turns off within 10 seconds you never know when that airbag will come out even if your not in a crash!
