CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

I have not a nice thing to say about this car. The power steering doesn't always work, I have changed the back lights, 3 time since Sept 2015, the turn signal does not cancel out when turn and make an awful noise as you turn. CD player works one min and then not the next. The lights on the dash that show the time, ect. has little lines in it at time. Ready to return it to a PONTIAC.

When I got the car I noticed that the rotars were warped by the front wobble when the brakes were applied. I took off the rotors and got them resurfaced. I put the rotors back on with new brake pads. About 3 months later the front wheel wobble started again. This time I just bought new rotors and installed them. Have not had any more problems with the brakes.

Just about a month after I bought my car I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel. I called the car company I bought it from and that's when they told me my car was in an accident and that was one of the problems it had when they first bought the car. It was supposed to be fixed, but never was. So they went ahead and supposedly fixed it. Then about 6 months later I have the same problem. So I get new rotors and breaks again! Seems to be okay now.

folks... the problem is rampant. Standard rotors warp fast no matter how 'nice' you are to them. Here is the answer. Install drilled rotors with matching ceramic pads. Period.

If you need a source to get these items, get them at r1concepts.com. They offer free shipping on orders > $150. On my G6 GTP, a set of front Eco-line drilled/slotted rotors with the best ceramic pads cost me a total of $155.oo for the parts and it was free delivery (fast). So far, 23,000 miles on them... zero wear, zero dust, zero warp and the rotors are mirror-clean. On top of that, the car stops on a dime with this kind of combination and is superior in inclement weather. Do it!

This car is the biggest hunk of junk i have had to change the rotors and brake pads 5 different times since 2007. I figured well if the rotors keep warping up it must be something with the pads apparently not my sister also owns one of these hunk of junks and she has had the same problem also some serious steering issues please fix these cars GM you sorry bastards.

my brakes went from a light scheech to an all out scream in a matter of weeks!! im a busy woman and couldnt get or afford to get it right into the shop. so after it got unbearable in just a couple of weeks i finally took it to the dealership. it cost me $500-600 for new brakes and ALL new rotors too!!! what?! this newer car should not need rotors!!! they were SO warped that there was NO saving them!!! Now less than two years later they are starting to squeek again! thank goodness im trading that piece in!!!

I developed a squeak in the front brakes. It appeared to come primarily front the front left tire. When the breaks were inspected they had about 1/2 half to 1/4 life remaining. Despite this, I requested the front and rear brake pads to be changed. The rotors had never been turned before. It was recommended that the front and rear rotors be turned also. After two weeks of driving and turning the rotor, I developed a significant vibration when braking. The rotors warped and had to be turned again. After two weeks of driving, I developed a significant vibration when braking again. I elected to replace the rotors. The vibration has stopped but the pads continue to squeak.
