CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

Rotor, brake pad and inner tire tread wear prematurely, even w/ "best" replacement parts put on multiple times... I've had this car since 2008. This has been a reoccurring issue every 20Kmi ... $1762 to fix at a dealership every time! 185000 miles on it...$16,300 in brakes, rotors and tire replacements! That's 1,000K less than I paid for the car! I love my Pontiac, but this is ridiculous! Pontiac Help!

I reported a life history of brakes squealing and repairs to pads, calipers etc before this problem developed. I noticed when I stepped on my brake frequently or suddenly the pedal would get really tight and hard like they were stuck or locked up. This would go on for a bit and id have to pull over and kill the car, sit for about 10 minutes then go again. Sometimes smoke would come from around my tires and it smelled burned like. As long as I was highway and limited touching of the brake it wouldnt do this but I always had to be cautious and aware and not drive it in heavy traffic at all. I got fed up with it and we replaced the brake hoses because we were told it sounded like they were collapsing and not allowing the fluid to get back up, thinking the brake was on? Anyway, that didnt help because we were never able to bleed the brakes from putting them on. the front passenger and rear driver would not bleed.

We ended up buying a new master cylinder and putting that on and so far that has fixed the problem. ive had it back 4 days so we'll see. It is driving much smoother and havent felt the tightness just yet. Again, numerous brake issues and no recall noted...Oddly enough, the rubber came off my tire by that front that was smoking,,this was a major safety issue in my eyes....

It is a sad situation when you have to replace brakes, rotors and pads at 30,000 miles. I am looking to trade my car but found out thru a safety check that all above needing replacing. I was selling my car to Grandaughter and wanted it to be safe and was shocked to find out that all these replacements were needed. We did not believe it from the dealer I most frequently use so went to another dealer and they showed us how the rotors were worn down. This should not happen at 30,000. miles. So, my whole Social Security check had to go to repairing this problem which should not have happened as Pontiac makes the rotors too thin and then they cannot be repaired by grinding to repair. I am very upset with having to spend this money before selling my car to my Granddaughter. I have had a lot of Pontiacs but feel this is definitely a defect in workmanship per Pontiac.
