CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2005 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2005 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for power steering problems, up to 10 years/100k miles.

As of early 2013 the NHTSA had 300+ steering complaints on file for the 2005 G6, with 12 crashes & 4 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2005 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2005 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

I purchased my car brand new back in 2005. I have always taken great care of it and taken it in to Pontiac for service. I have a LIST of items that have been fixed under warranty since my car had about 6,000 miles. I have the panoramic sunroof and I have hardly used it. This year when the rain started we noticed that the car got foggy like if there was a leak inside. We did not have any water in the car but we knew there was a leak and we also got the message in the radio saying that the car had "reduced engine power". My car started stalling and having problems turning on! I took it in to Pontiac/GM dealer and it cost me $250 to fix for now....to replace the weatherstrip it will cost me an additional $750!!! I called Pontiac/GM and they started a case...this is really frustrating since my car is in good condition and only 5 years old. They said that they could not help!!! I have had nothing but issues and things replaced in this car and GM is not willing to help!

i've got this problem with my car, when it rains alot or when i get it washed water seems to leak in on the driver side one time when it rained for a couple days there ended up being a puddle in the foot area on the back seat and i thought that sucked then a few weeks later it rained but not nearly as much and i had the engine warning light come on as well as no traction control light and a message in the radio/display thing saying reduced engine power and a canadian tire wasnt too far so i chanced it and drove it there which wasnt too bad i just had to drive slow and it would stall when ever i stopped at an intersection so i had to restart it and when i got the they did a diagnostic and they said it was the accelerator position sensor so i left it in the shop overnight and found out there was a chevy dealer a couple blocks away and took it there but when i drove it out of the canadian tire the car worked fine no warning lights at all. it didnt rain much more during the rest of the summer and it winter here now so if anyone fixed a problem like this themselfs and it wasnt too difficult let me know cause i'd like to try tackle this myself b4 i take it to a dealer cause i kinda think all those car places just rip people off this is my first newer car all my other ones i manged to fix myself with my dads help but he doesnt know too much about the newer cars
