CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2005 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2005 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for power steering problems, up to 10 years/100k miles.

As of early 2013 the NHTSA had 300+ steering complaints on file for the 2005 G6, with 12 crashes & 4 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2005 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2005 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

I think GM should PAY for the problems. The consumers should not have to be pay that kind of money for there poor design.

I have a Pontiac G6 2005 I bought approx 2 yrs ago, I'm having the same problem as everyone else, the power steering is going off. This problem started three months after I bought my car. I'm writing this message for everyone who has the same problem call the this number and let them know what's going on because they said they needed more complaints with the power steering. GM 1 800 620 7668 or NHTSA 1 888 327 4236. This power steering problem is a dangerous thing puts at risk the drivers and passengers life.

I have read some of the posts and I can't believe that GM doesn't see that this has to be a recall item. I spoke with a Service representative at a local GM dealer and he told me that they have seen several Cobalts with the same issue. Why the hell have other car makers been able to perfect the electrical power steering and their sorry a** can't seem to admit that they F'D UP!!! I am furious. I have to take my car in on Thursday and I think I will bring my vaseline with me, because I am going to get screwed.

Currently the steering is going in and out. My biggest fear is to be in an accident. Is there anything we can do to rectify this problem?

I took the time to write this because I have found many of you out there are having the problem and I wanted to say that you are not alone. I bought this vehicle from a used car dealer. It is a pontiac G6 2005 and I've had problems with the power steering also, it has happened to me about 5 times mostly when I am driving. The power steering goes and the fix vehicle light comes on. When I pull over and turn the vehicle off then on again the problem disappears. I took it back to the dealer and explained the problem. They took it in and ran some tests including a test drive but the problem didn't happen to them. So they told me when the problem does happen again to take it back within 24hrs. Apparently the vehicle's computer will send out codes (within the first 24-48hrs even if it resets) that GM's computer will be able to read and find the exact problem to be fix. I am somewhat lucky I have a 60day 3,000 mile guaranteed on the vehicle so they have to fix it free of charge, I just hope it will happen getting out of my driveway so I don't get into an accident. I hope this info will help someone.

The estimated cost the fix the power steering was $700.00, however, I after I researched the problem I called GM directly and they informed me about the problem that these cars had been encountering and they were offering a warranty to cover this problem with power steering.

Within a year of buying my new car the electric power steering gave out almost resulting in an accident! Called dealership and they were no help. By the time GMAC sent out the letter stating they would cover it under the extended warranty my car was out of the warranty mileage. I refuse to pay the $900 they said it would cost to fix! I know one of these days it will give out while im driving and cause me to hurt myself or another driver!

They said that it was a problem with the power steering and that it would be covered by the extended warranty, thank god I got it. For some reason I have seen a lot of same car owners complain about having a problem with the power steering. I suggest it be a manufacture defect and consider it a recall, I mean I was covered by the extended warranty, but not everyone has it. Plus, it was the first year of entirely new car!

The steering would seem to freeae at times when I first start the car. I received a notice from Pontiac about a problem with the steering so I thought that it was a recall. When I went in to have it fixed was told that there was no recall on the steering. I have an extended warrenty that only covered part of the cost. Would like to know who to cantact to get a refund on this repair?

Well where should we start? This is my wife's car and I am afraid for her to drive it with my children. Like many others it started with the poping noise in the steering wheel which was fixed under warranty not once but twice. While driving to church near a park where children were playing my steering locked up and it scared the life out of me. I was afraid I was going to hit a kid before I could steer it to a stopping point. The bad thing is that when you turn off the car it resets itself and then its hard to explain or hard to pin point a problem to fix. But here's the real kicker, My car only has 30,000 miles on it and my warranty ran out due to the fact that the 36 months hit us first. One month later this started happening. Which seems odd that we never got the first piece of mail to renew warranty and we are still getting mail to renew the warranty a year later on our truck. I just think that this a real safety hazard and it really upsets us because this is our 3rd Pontiac and we are beginning to hate them.

The day I bought the vehicle my step dad was driving it and said that when he turned a corner the wheel jerked out of his hand. I drove the car and the same thing happened to me, almost resulting in an accident. I took the car in and they said they didn't know what the problem was and that they weren't able to get it to do it for them when they tried driving it. I got my car back and it did it again! My car is now in hopefully being fixed, I think there needs to be a recall on these vehicles before somebody gets seriously injured or dies!!!!

Like many others, I am having problems with my Electronic Power Steering going out. This problem started out happening every once in a while and is now happening much more frequently. This makes it very difficult to steer and creates possible safety issues. The local dealer indicates that the cost for repair will be about 400 dollars and will be my responsibility. Do you have any information with regard to a recall account this problem and or any other means for me to recover the cost from Pontiac, on account this is obviously a design flaw given the amount of others who are having the same problems.

My car was working great for about 5 months until my Power steering would go out when i wasn't even hardly turing the wheel. Just barely moving it and it would just go out. My stereo would say Power steering and my service or engine light would come on. The dealership said that this car has electrical power steering and that at times when steering is being used too much (example in a U turn and your keeping it in the position for long time) that it can go out and should return after a few turns or movements. Total BS. How can this be safe?! There have been about 22 complaints about electrical power steering in which about three people have been in accidents due to this!! This is a cheap part of course to replace the more expensive one... I argued that this is not normal!!!

So I bugged. I took it into the dealership twice before they found the problem. First they reset the steering column (re-synchronized the sensors that were off) and i got the car back and it was working great for 1 week. Then starting having the same problem again! Took in in and they said that the steering was not going out on them and they kept test driving it. Not true. Finally they say that the steering column has to be replaced and its going to cost 700.00. I paid this amount out of my own pocket. Now Pontiac has sent me something in the mail saying to submit my receipt and I will be reimbursed for this repair. This car has given me nothing but trouble. Now my panoramic sunroof needs to be fixed , another 700.00 replace the whole sunroof with a used.. and a few other problems that will cost maybe 300 to fix altogether. I HATE THIS CAR! , and am looking into getting a new one soon. It wont be an American make car thats for sure !! DONT GET A PONTIAC !!
