This isn't the first time this has happened (has happened intermittently since the car was brand new) but this is the first time I've been unable to start the car. When I turn the key to start....nothing....no engine crank...no clicking...nothing. In the past, I used to get out of my car, unlock & lock the back hatch, return to the car & then problem solved....car starts. This happened intermittently with my regular & spare key. It was completely unpredictable but as long as I was getting it started I did not pursue the problem with the dealer. (such a hassle to go to a dealer with "It only happens sometimes" story). Yesterday was different. My car is sitting at work since yesterday. I need my car tomorrow. I did notice yesterday before work (I had to do the back hatch routine in the morning again) on the way to work, clock wasn't working & radio wasn't working. I walked home & returned by cicycle. I tried both keys (as suggested page 2-16 owners manual) & moved some 15 amp fuses around the instrument panel fuse block. Switched wipers with AUDIO/RKE but no favorable result. Also switched Cigar Lighter but it appears it is also not working and I'm certain my son used the lighter not more than 2 weeks ago without a problem. I'm biking back to my car this afternoon with some spare fuses. I'm hoping it's just a fuse issue. I didn't notice that there is an "engine compartment fuse block" under the hood until just now while browsing the owner's manual. If I wanted to bike to work, I wouldn't have bought my car. This is annoying.
Update from May 2, 2012: Pushed car to gm dealer. The dealer did a scan with the result, they claim, that there was no ignition voltage present. They claim there was a corroded connection at the ignition fuse. I reminded them that this had been happening since the first month of ownership but they seem satisfied that this has been the problem all along. Thankfully my car had less than 60K km (warranty) & there was no charge for the service performed.
Regarding me previously being able to get the car started after unlocking the hatch back, they say "coincidence".
Update from May 4, 2012: The story isn't over yet. Thursday morning after 30-minute stop at Dr's office the car wouldn't start. Same thing is happening with no crank, no click....nothing. I got out of the car, locked & unlocked hatch back, get back into the car & it starts. I wanted the dealer to know so I drove there and told him the problem has not been fixed as the same thing had just happened not more than 10 minutes ago & I was able to start it the usual way (lock & unlocked back hatch). The service reception rep said he would make a note of it. I got back into my car & again it would not start. I didn't bother trying my lock & unlock ritual. I went back to reception & handed him the key & said to fix it this time. Less than 200 km & about 10 starts since they told me it was fixed. They certainly did do something the first time because my radio & clock were working again, but they didn't fix the original problem. The dealer called later in the day & said they were ordering an entire new under-dash fuse block but it will take until Monday or Tuesday to get it. I've left the car there in the mean time.
Update from Jun 3, 2012: The car was at the dealer's place from May 3/12 to May 8/12 (included a weekend) while they awaited and installed a new part described on the invoice as N1730 Wiring Harness Junction Block Assembly. (They also said there was an outstanding recall. I am positive I received no notice of a recall. That work was the instllation of new spark plug boots and springs. Shortly afterward I did receive a recall notice in the mail dated May 2012 for a degraded connection between the spark plug boots on the ignition coil assembly and the spark plugs. This sounds like the work that was performed.) I've driven the car since May 9/12 and I have not had a starting issue since the new wiring harness junction block assembly was installed. It appears my problem may be solved. Hope so.
Update from Jun 3, 2012: Well I'll be damned. I waited a good period of time before finalizing this issue but guess what? Today, probably within 2 hours of making my last entry, I try to start my car at Loblaws grocery store in my home town and ........nothing......no engine crank.....no clicking.......nothing. The problem is NOT FIXED. It's about 1225 (shortly after noon) & I have 5 minutes to make my 1230 meeting. I get out of the car, open the back hatch with my key, get back into the car & now it starts. It's that "coincidence" again. My car is now at 59,072 km & my 60K warranty is fast approaching. I will call the dealer tomorrow. This is annoying.
