The transmission started slipping at 26,000 miles and at times, somewhat jerking into gear. The problem appeared to be worse when the car was cold and when you were shifting into higher gears, it wasn't as noticeable on downshifting. The problem was supposedly fixed but reappeared in less than 20,000 miles. The problem wasn't as noticeable the second time and we thought maybe it just needed an adjustment. We were informed that there was metal in the transmission fluid and the whole transmission had to be replaced. The van is a low mileage vehicle with easy town and highway driving miles and the vehicle has never towed anything. The vehicle appeared to have a factory installed defective unreliable transmission.

Catastrophic failure of transmission at 54800 miles is shows a serious flaw in quality of the component. Failure occurred at city speeds, but wife had just pulled out on to heavly traveled road(hwy 6) with an appropriate distance between her and an oncoming tracter trailer. Failure of transmission caused the truck to catch up to her, an accident was avoided when she pulled to the side of the road. Our 2 year old and 3 month old children were in the vehicle with her. There are numerous reports of transmission failures on this model and related Chrysler products on the internet. The failure of the front drive axle occurred on a crowded highway. Although the vehicle was still functioning, the noise required full attention from me to assertain the situation while manuevering at highway speeds. When the vehicle was purchased I noted a continuous pulling to the left. I took the vehicle in for various reasons and always had them look for the problem. The problem was varified but the cause was never determined. Since the new axle was put in the vehicle no longer pulls. Obviously a bad axle was the cause and it was doomed to failure. Inspection of the broken part showed a rusty nonuniform ball and socket while the other ball and socket in the assembly was still metalic and smooth. I would also note that the highly respected repair shop that did the work found that the replacement parts indicated in the maual did not fit the vehical, they checked two different model numbers and neither fit. The third attempt purchased from Chrysler did fit.

Steel pin inside transmission loosened and rotated inside trans case and blew a hole 3 X 6 inches in the trans case losing all fluid and locking the trans up. Call to Chrysler dealer confirmed that it was a problem, trans shop said they were averaging 1 a month and that ours was the worst they had seen to date and that bodily injury was probable had my wife been traveling at highway speeds Chrysler wanted the trans back but said that age and mileage prevented any reinbursement which is exactly what they said when the wheel bearings failed, they were man made parts and man made parts wear out. Every dealer /trans shop I have talked tosays that the trans are good for 80000 miles inthe northeast and are prone to failure they aren't in the South because of the absence of slippery conditions. I wasn't aware that a 25000 dollar vehicle should be considered disposable after 80000 miles unless you are willing to pay 1500 dollars for a trans and 510 for wheel bearings especially since this is supposed to be the most popular vehicle in its class

Our van only has 65,000 miles. When driving down the street we heard a noise and the van jerked and then made funny noises. We brought it into the shop the told us that we need a new transmission. It exploded inside. There should be a recall on all these vans with bad transmission. I hope some day soon something is done about this problem for the customer. This is not very good customer service providing customers defective vehicles.
