Air bags are something that should not fail on a vehicle since it is government regulated safety equipment on a vehicle and it is a low wear item. My airbags have failed and Chrysler expects me to pay to fix them. They have also tied the airbags into the horn and cruise control. I feel that since this is a safety related item, Chrysler should be responsible for the repairs. If these bags fail to deploy or misfire due to their design, I and my passengers could be severely hurt or killed.

Dealer tells me that the clock spring has been recalled in earlier models, but not yet in the 1996. I understand this is not an uncommon problem in this car.

Air bag light would come on and off intermittently while driving. Upon observation after noticed, no particular pattern seen related to driving conditions. Did not realize importance of light (meaning probable air bag failure) until taken to dealer to be fixed. Repairs were over $200. Told the problem was in the "clockspring" when asked if this happened much, told a "few." This car required a new transmission at 50,000 miles. I am sendintg this notice in because I read in my local newspaper with automotive news that you are doing a defect investigation about this topic. I don't know if car dealers are required to notify you of their repairs so I'm making sure my car is included in your count.

Airbag light comes on, and horn fails at same time on an intermittent basis. Mechanic has advised that he has seen the same failure on other Chrysler products recently. Mechanic claims that the wires for the airbag and horn are getting pinched somehow as they come up the steering wheel assembly, and through the device that allows the wires to turn with the steering wheel. Since there is no current recall, we will have this part replaced as it is a safety hazard to drive without a horn and airbag. We have a high mileage vehicle and perhaps this is the start of a problem with this vehicle or maybe this vehicle is a fluke. In any case, I thought you should be aware of the problem.

The air bag light comes on indicating the air bag is not active, the interior dome lights have gone out. It appears as though there is a short. It has been into the dealer and they are unable to find the problem. This seems similar to a recall on the 1995 vans. The airbag makes this issue a concern to me, and the dealer can not find the problem.
